go in order of releases. to realy appreciate his growth.

I agree. Although years ago when I became a Prince fan, I didn't get them in sequence, I've listened to them all since then in the correct order and you really do see how he has grown, progressed, and how his style has changed.

Then you hit 2000 and it all goes downhill from there. neutral

eek I think that you should try to get the albums in the sequence that they were released, if not, try Parade, very good album. Then you HAVE to go 4 Sign o the times, amazing album. I could go on! Try to avoid, D and Pearls, Gold experience, Symbol album. These have very good music on them but have not aged very well.
Thats my bit hehe, at the end of the day NJOY whatever you decide to get. wink

welcome to the org and the fun! as a relatively new fan myself (who's happily travelling down the windy road of fandom), my suggestions are a bit different from those made by my fellow orgers:

first, buy the hits/b-sides...this will give you a sample of all the pre-1993 era stuff and you'll get a chance to try out a bit of everything in a relatively digestable sample. while the collection leaves out some major songs and doesn't include anything after 1993, it'll give you a chance to find out what genre/pre 1993 era of prince you prefer.

next, since you want cds, check out amazon/ebay/barnes and noble (online) and buy the albums that are (1) cheapest and (2) in the era you prefer. if you're going to eventually end up buying everything anyway (like i did razz), you might as well buy everything as cheaply as possible...especially since the npg releases and some other albums are much more expensive... (for instance, i found 3121 for a penny on amazon a while back).

hope this helps, and while it is a journey, i'm sure you'll enjoy it!! welcome to the dawn smile

Hits and B-sides is a nice starter too.
That second disc is just killer.

Yeah really - I'm surprised that the Hits - Hits B Sides did not get mentioned earlier in this Blog... ( if they were, then i mssed it )
or even.. the Ulitmate Prince -

A new fan .. in this day and age could get more of an array of Sounds, Styles, and a Bag full of NASTY Jams... from prince !!DUH!!!
it's like given your curious prince fan a mixed tape ..NEVER GIVE THEM A DAMN FULL LENGTH ALBUM ... LOL...

ANY NEW FANS OUT THERE...still poking around
Grab a hits collection before buying full length albums. - this way U won't get stuck on 1 Prince theme, Era AKA time period.... Older fans know that Prince's full lengths albums take ALOT, Alot, Aolt of time to grow on you.

Grab a hits collection and GET YOUR GROOVE ON, if u like certain songs, then go on Itunes & SCAN THE ALBUM THAT the singles CAME FROM....
I'M SORRY ...the dude who started this blog was lead wrong!!!

THE HIT/ HITS BSIDE PACKEAGE WILL HOLD FOR A LONG FUNK'N TIME....
THEN DIG INTO THE FULL LENGtHS ....when u know every song, word by word, drum by drum, vocal by vocal -- U'LL BE NICE & PRINCELY OBSESSED LIKE THE REST OF US.. then the albums will have a better taste in your mouth!! ahhaha ahahahaa

Hey guys,

I'm a relatively new Prince fan, and I was wondering if any of you had suggestions on which album I should get next. I have two of the classics Purple Rain and 1999, and I also have Musicology. I'm sort of leaning towards Diamonds and Pearls. What do you think? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm going to be completely honest with you.

To get a true appreciation of Prince and why he's so brilliant, you have to listen to his 80's output sequentially. Listen to each album from beginning to end and try and 'get' what he's doing. He's 80's albums were not afterthoughts. They were brilliantly constructed artistic statements, which just happened to have great 'singles' in them.

So....

Dirty Mind
Controversy

(1999 & PR you have)

Around The World in A Day
Parade (one of my all time favorites)
Sign of The Times (this is considered his most essential album. I love it)
LoveSexy (and if you can find the Black Album, listen to each as if they're a set)

-----
After LoveSexy, I don't think it's necessary to listen to them in sequence.

I would go with:

The Symbol Album (quirky, uneven and brilliant)
Come
The Gold Experience (one of my favorites)
Emancipation (one of my favorites--and cheap now if you can find it)
3121 <--his most radio friendly album this decade
lotusflow3r (a real bargain)

The problem with Prince is that even his bad albums have really neat songs or moments in them. And all of his albums are different from each other. Even the often criticized Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic has moments in it that are great (I love the vocals in TGRES).

Just my 2 cents

Spot on! There's nothing I would really add, apart from maybe checking out the Prince album,
to get a feel of where he came from and how much of a quantum leap
was made between that and Dirty Mind.
My only other point would be to mention how great I think The Hits/B-Sides package is as an introduction to new fans.
There's a lot missing but overall, it's perfect as a starting point for anyone whose totally oblivious to his music.
Classy Herb Ritts artwork and fantastic liner notes by Alan Leeds.
And quite cheap these days too. I remember paying over £35 for it back
in the day!

If you are randomly buying Prince albums I would suggest you get the following to start the Purple Fun…

Lotusflow3r/MPLSound
The Gold Experience
Parade
prince
Emancipation
3121
Sign Of The Times
Lovesexy
Planet Earth
New Power Soul
Diamonds and Pearls
Batman

These should hold you up and get you started.

Enjoy! cool

Wait just a minute. A NEW Prince fan?!? That is awesome! But what I want to know is, HOW did you become a Prince fan?

Because if you listen to some of the people here, Prince hasn't done anything that could create a new fan since about 1994.

So I really am curious. How did you discover Prince, and what about him kept your attention?
