Didn't Prince play with or was involved some way with Eric Clapton at least once in the 80's? And I seem to remember a video on that Interactive CD perhaps that had Eric Clapton speaking about him..
He's the man who played the original solo on WMGGW and hes obviously well aware of Prince, and Prince of him, so I reckon he's heard it  | |

I cant say for sure, but so very highly doubtful he never heard the song.
You really have had to musically isolated yourself from radio and the world for a 50 year old man to have never heard of it. Its was a freaking hit song that to this day is still on regular rotation on any classic rock station, in elevators, at the grocery store, on television. Its not like Beatles classics are obscure esoteric hard to find tunes. Pop culture is plastered with them. Possible, but highly doubtful, especially from a musician. I think he might have been honest with saying: I didnt know that (particular Beatles) song. But, maybe just a week prior the show or so. I can imagine the organisation asking him to play along with the song, and that he had for a week to study it or so.
But. As some people seem to suggest, He certainly wasn't unformiliar with the Beatles material in general at that point. He surely didnt borrow the effects on his vocals on Annie Christian (the lyrics talking about John Lennon, by the way) and DMSR from bands like Boston and Grand Funk Railroad... And especially from the mid-eighties on, you can hear he (and/or his bandmembers) listened and took elements from the Beatles albums: the melody lines of the song Paisley Park are pure Lennon-like, the way he incorporates strings in Raspberry Beret echoes the song Eleanor Rigby, Christopher Tracey's Parade is almost an pastiche of Magical Mystery Tour (complete with quasi-psychedelic worldplay like: strawberry lemonade). Sound and arrangement-wise also songs like I Wonder U, Starfish and Coffee and Glam Slam owe a lot to the work of the Beatles. And lets not forget the title track from ATWIAD and the suite-like composition Crystal Ball. | |

This was a lie b/c Prince was a big Beatles fan back in the day. As per the editor of Rolling Stone magazine, back in the 80's Prince requested all of the articles ever written in Rolling Stone on The Beatles and Joni Mitchell. He knew that song for sure. At this stage in his career Prince is trying to be as black as possible. Saying you are a fan of The Beatles is going to lose you a lot of black music street cred he wants. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

A couple of years ago i worked with a cameraman who shot some of the interviews with npg bandmembers for the diamonds and pearls video and he told me he watched prince jammin just playing loads of beatles tracks, he said he could play the beatles back catalogue verbatum! | |

The only Beatles song listed on The WNPG Origin Playlist(xcerpt): is "A Day In The Life" This is the list in back of booklet included with One Nite Alone...Live CD set.

There appears to be some agreement that the playlist is indeed in the ONA..live booklet, However, there is now some discrepency amongst orgers as to what 'beatles'/'harrison' track actual makes the list. I was certain that it was 'while my guitar gently weeps' others are suggesting in may be 'day in the life' or 'something' Ohh how exciting

I heard he just didnt rehearse the song with them. They sent him the music/cd, but he never rehearsed with them. Basically what you saw on the show was the first and only time they performed this song together. | |
