Dance 4 Me is a Marvin Gaye rip-off?

Okay i dont know if this has been mentioned before, but i was just sitting at home listening to Marvin Gayes "Dream Of A Lifetime" album from 1985.
When the song "Masochistic Beauty" came on, i was immediately thinking: Hmmm, where do i know this beat from?

Now i think i know - this old MG song is/was the "blueprint" to Princes "Dance 4 Me"!

Or is something wrong with my ears?
Please check it out and tell me if you hear it as well... confused

no no no - Have you listened to the Marvin Gaye song?

It's not just the beat! It's also a almost identical melody and similiar bass line!

What are the odds for that happening by accident please?

rolleyes

Could you listen to the song first and comment afterwards please?

Despite the comment above, as a musician, that baseline is almost identical.
It's played slightly different but u are correct.

The bass line in "Masochistic Beauty" was very common back in the day. There were a bunch of jams with bass lines far more similar.

The bass line in "Dance 4 Me" is nowhere near a "rip off", as stated. Just sayin'.

Shit that is the same music idea. But lot's of music get repeated, same idea with different details. I bet there are more songs that use this idea. This Marvin Gaye song has so many "prince" brand ideas in it including the title. I'm sure it like many Gaye's songs was a huge influence. Soaked in.

Actually the lyric pattern is like that Rockwell song in parts.

That would be all well, good and perfectly understandable, if we weren't talking about the very same man that goes to such ridiculous extremes when it comes to his own music and "protecting" his copyrights.

I am hearing the Marvin Gaye song for the first time today This song, Masochistic Beauty was just as explicit as some of Prince's early stuff. i.e. Dirty Mind, Extralovable etc. check it out for yourselves if you havent heard it before.

That was Marvin's plan for the album. He wanted "Sanctified Lady" to be called "Sanctified Pussy".

Love Marvin Gaye, but he was a freak too eek Some of his Lyrics are very risque and probably x-rated for the 70's falloff

I hear what your saying, but given the age of that album, I would venture a guess that Marvin Gaye's album was significantly influenced by Prince's very popular sound at the time.

So what we may have is Prince writing a song influenced by Gaye, which was in turn influenced by Prince?

biggrin

There are similarities - but the question was "is it a rip-off?"....the answer to which is a resolute "NO"!!!

How many times are people gonna bring this up? Do you have any idea how many songs use the same chord progression? Use the same rhythm? Same melody? Countless!

I mean, this is the equivalent of accusing every other car manufacturer of ripping off Ford because their car has 4 wheels too!! nuts
