Prince's guitar really sounds thin these days I think he's given up on miked cabinets in favor of weak, thin, digital tones. Lots of processing, very little meat or soul. Case in point: all of Lotusflower.

that was a good one for him, wasn't it I wonder if there was any trouble making the huge symbol guitar sound good - it's got such a crazy oddball shape. Hmmm, never considered that before

I think the opposite. Prince used to have a processed tone since Lovesexy until TRC days (besides the Gold ERA). On the 00´s Prince went to an rawer sound with less delay and flanger. Prince always used digital tone (zoom rack) mixed with lots of boss pedals.

I guess I was referring to his Purple Rain/SOTT sound vs what he's doing now.

I agree. The Hohner sounds relatively the same in some ways, but the purple symbol guitar doesn't quite have that wetness to it that the Hohner does. The Gold era symbol guitar has always sounded good.

I have to admit, I didn't know the Purple Rain solo was done on the Hohner until this year. WOW, I didn't think a tele could sound that way. I guess I got some similar sounds out of my Fender when I had it. I miss that thing!

I agree. Honestly I would LOVE it if he would put away the pedals and whammy for one song at least. However, it's not like he's freakin Buckethead er anything. At least he uses those effects with taste. He did Dreamer beautifully. I think there is meat and soul in his music, that's the reason he hasn't faded out all these years. It's there under it all. But more than anything- I want him to do a stripped down record. How amazing yet highly unlikely would that be. Goodness will guide us if love is inside us

I think his guitar sounds good these days, for instance on Dreamer. And his guitar work on Canal+ when he played Controversy was great!

Prince has always preferred to plug his guitar directly into the mixing board. If he's mic'd cabinets in the studio, it's a rare event. It's not laziness, just the way he likes to do it. Fast. Purple Fact #542: Prince can make a Weeble™ fall down.

If you like the way "fast" sounds, that's cool for you and him. I would argue that it's his ego getting in the way of craftsmanship, as usual.

I never liked the cloud guitars. THOSE were thin, tinny, and dry as all hell. It's why the solos in "Purple Rain" never sounded right live. He didn't use the cloud to record that solo. He used the Hohner. It wasn't until he played the Brit Awards a couple of years ago w/ the Hohner that "Purple Rain" sounded right again. The Blue angel and the peach guitar during the SOTT/Lovesexy era was super thin too, to me. The same arguments can be made for his drum programming too. WAY too thin and uninteresting. [Edited 10/22/09 15:49pm] OUCH! You didnt like the 80's live performances of Purple Rain? Wow! I still get chills whenever I hear purple rain from "Prince and the Revolution Live" 1985

I just never thought "Purple Rain" sounded like it could have been. Remember, we've heard "Purple Rain" when it was recorded on the First Avenue bootleg, as well as the album version, which is of course a live cut. When he did it live on tour, it never has the same sounds on it. I understand a big of rearrangement in a song on a tour to keep it interesting (like the middle extended break in "Let's Go Crazy" 12" being put in "Delirious", etc), but him using the cloud on tour because of the imagery opposed to how it's supposed to SOUND makes for a HUGE difference. it wasn't until he started using the Hohner again that "Purple Rain" sounded right. Case in point: The Brit Awards w/ Wendy, Lisa, and Sheila E. a couple of years ago. THAT is when "Purple Rain" sounded right again. Ernest L Sewell, IV

I love almost every live version Ive ever heard, but I do see where your coming from. The Brit Awards version was awesome!

..wasn't the Lovesexy "sound" for his guitar work intentionally supposed to be "thin" or "high" ...a spiritual thing

I thought the Musicology live shows were a bit "clean and processed" but since then he's gotten a rawness and fulness back to his playing.

Hi, I'm a noob and hope I'm not highjacking this topic, but I logged in for just this reason, about his guitar sound. Does anyone know what amps and pedals he was using around Dirty Mind live? Just saw a video and I think he and Dez sounded great, you know really raw but cool. if anyone knows I would appriciate some insight, thanks

Dez Dickerson has said that Prince used Mesa Boogies and very few pedals(no specifics, but Prince has always been partial to Boss pedals) during his tenure with him. Purple Fact #542: Prince can make a Weeble™ fall down.

Ok thanks. your purple fact about Taco bell made me LOL. I thought his sound on this video was like a cranked Fender Twin with I guess like a Fuzz Face or something, but could be a Mesa.
