I think you have to look back a bit further to see conflict.

Sinead O'Conor's manager was Steve Fargnoli, who was also prince's manager with Cavallo and Ruffalo. So Steve most probs knew about most of the songs that Prince had recorded.

This is just speculation on my part now.

Due to the bad feeling of the split between Prince and Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli. Steve thought that Sinead could do better with this song due to Warner Bros and Prince having difficulties over Paisley Park and the funding of.

This most probs annoyed Prince and meeting Sinead
