Hello org, I'm very new to this site, although I've browsed the forums for years. Anyway to cut to the chase, I was online researching various Prince songs, and I happened to come across one of his older cuts, Pussy Control. Needless to say, I was both disappointed and embarrassed that such a profilic artist would stoop to such a low level. While I consider myself a diehard Prince fan (I was born the year Purple Rain came out), I've heard about the song, but never had a chance to listen it thoroughly until today.

So my question is, when did this song come out (i.e. year, album period), and was Prince going for shock value when he recorded this? I realize the latter question may be difficult to answer, but all feedback is welcome.

Lastly, was it just me or was I the only laughing Prince's use of profanity throughout the song? It's almost as if he was trying to be something he wasn't, a hip, young and exciting artist.
-----

It is meant to be funny and should you try listening to the lyrics since the song is in no way a put down on woman.

I could understand your shock at the time since you would have still been in grade school but your an adult now.
Again, I'm interested to hear everyone's feedback...

Yes, some orgers would not know a good groove if it fell from the sky and hit them in the head.

Evidently not if you can't even consult a discography.

P.Control is corny as hell, it's Prince in his 'gangsta rap' phase, when he was trying to incorporate swearing and rapping in his music, as per the trends at the time. But like 'Days Of Wild' and 'Now', 'Face Down' and even 'Acknowledge Me' - it actually works, not in a 'wow Prince is a hardcore MF', but just in a good pop song kinda way. Some of this era reminds me of an updated MPLS sound, as if he'd put a post-New Jack Swing stamp on it.

that first AAAAAhhhhh Pussy Control, Oh is SO left field worship

You call yourself a "diehard" fan, yet you'd never heard this song before and don't know when it came out? lol

I attended his Glam Slam MPLS shows in 1994 when this song was introduced over the loudspeakers, and I can tell you that Prince absolutely WAS a hip, young and exciting artist at that moment in time. There was nothing unnatural about it, especially his use of profanity, which was common for him in many of his best songs.

As for the lyrics, I think the whole tongue-in-cheek concept is just going over your head... but that's ok.

I love this song, I'm not really sure what it means and I don't think it should be taken too seriously ..... it s sounds so good and its so fun.

You may think I'm crazy but I think it highlights his genuis even more ... he can do anything and has so much variation in his music.

Im sure Prince has done many worse songs that this!

It is meant to say that a woman should be free and not controlled by men.

This is clear on first listen. I'm amazed that people don't pay attention even the slightest to lyrics disbelief

What amazes me is than non-Prince fans seem to like it. If it gets played at a club people will actually get up and dance to it. Mainly women and gays, though.

People dance to it because it is a really good dance record but I guess that P has made some incredible dance music is lost on some members of the non-rhythmic nation.

It's a stone-cold jam. But ya like what ya like.

SG, Did you ever hear the astoria boot from the mid 90's? He is jamming on Pussy Control with the NPG and Eric Leeds is guesting. During a breakdown which has Eric riffing on his sax Prince begins to build a musical tension and says 'Take me into G fellas' and the band drop the groove by a semi-tone as they kick back in and Eric tears it up on his saxaphone. Totally inspired and absolutely Flawless. It probably one of the funkiest things i have ever heard Prince do. It's fuckin' incredible. Arguably one of my favourite boot moments.

Its actually the 'Emporium 22nd' show and not the Astoria edit.
[Edited 8/13/09 4:15am]

I do have the Emporium bootleg, but I never gave it a thorough listen because the sound quality isn't that good. I don't remember P Control being on it, but I am definitely going to give it a new listen. biggrin

Well that would not include me. P Control's beat is really lame. The Remix is better (somewhat). Now play DMSR, Erotic City, or even Dance 4 Me and I'm on the floor. P Control, nope.

thumbs up!

It happens near the very end of the track (7.15) until (0.22) as it spills over onto the next track (funky design) so you need to have them cued up. It's such an awesome piece of band leadership. Eric is on fire too nod

"London, what i need you to do... besides throwing them cameras down... this aint a photo session mutha fucka!:

"women and gays" you said. real nice. does that "lessen" the song in your eyes? Or was that "woman and gays" part meant to emphasize/validate your point?

really? the remix is better? because i hate the remix. to me, it's for people who need someone to count out 1, 2, 3, 4 for them in order to be able to dance or find the funk in something.

I said "somewhat". Which means not too much. That's my opinion. I still don't like the song either way but if I had to pick one, Crystal Ball's version is better.
And if Prince felt the need to remix it perhaps he also thought no one would find the funk in it. I know I didn't.
