Well I always thought the song was P talking 2 god about being reincarnated and becuz hes been bad in his other lives god keeps refusing him in2 heaven and reincarnating him ova and ova. Stupidly when I first heard the song I thought he was singing 2 a lover

I think the Dolphin's blowhole represents an anal fixation.

It's a geniusly written song and under looked as that.

I knew a girl at Princefams that thought that song was really about a fish, poor thing.

I think "Dolphin" is another underrated Prince song, as well. I thought it was about his music getting respected by the industry and some fans, and maybe especially radio.

he uses water elememts as kinda like his translation of this world..or this life..interesting..Dolphins are sopposed to have a spiecal connection with humans..

i think the song is kinda sad...its Prince's vulnerable side spiritually..he feels kinda like he isnt being listened to

It's about him and his relationship to Warner Brothers. He asks them how they want to judge him and his music if they don't even give him a chance. He wants to be free as a dolphin so they could perceive his music as what it is and not as an outcome of arguments and disagreements.

I think it could be song by anyone who feels opressed, to their opressor.

It ain't about reincarnation. It's all about his relationship with Warner Bros. Kinda obviously actually.

I was under the impression it was based on the french meaning of the word "Dauphiné" meaning the Prince / Dolphine , it was adopted as prince due to the fact that the heir to the throne (ie the prince) of France would be known as "le Dauphiné".

So as it was during the 0(+> era it was saying if I came back as prince would you listen to to me then..as a kind of message to the WB crowd at the time for losing him.

its incomplete... its one of many P songs that he thought the hook and melody were so strong that the obscure and nursery rhyme type lyrics didn't matter

I'm sure he feels differently now. Not one of his finner moments IMO

I agree with those who said the song is about Warner Brothers. That has always been my interpretation of the song, anyway.

I immediately thought of Little Richard, and how he was in the headlines a bit in the 90's about having nothing after all he's done in rock n' roll and the records he's sold. Richard was getting a lot of disrespect back then. He was honored in some awards show, and was only allowed to stand up and wave to the audience, while IN the audience, opposed to getting on stage and having a say about the award.

Now whether that line is about Little Richard, I don't know, but he came to mind for whatever reason.
