Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) is easily one of the darkest and paranoid tracks Prince has ever done. It just sends chills up my spine, even though its catchy as hell. "Everything Must Change, Nothing Stays The Same!"

This album would definitely have to be #2 on my list of favorite P albums, behind Sign O The Times. An inventive and groundbreaking work that showed the fullblown genius of his artistry and demonstrated that he could be a pop wizard, but it didn't last because he later changed it up with albums like Around the World and Parade. I could be here all day singing the praises of 1999, its easily the best of all the pre Purple Rain stuff (And I like it more than Purple rain). Your right about LRC oozing hit and how great Lets Pretend we're married is. Youre right too by saying that All the Critics is the weakest song, but I will agree to disagree about International Lover, a sexy steamer natural follow up to Do Me Baby, even though Do Me baby is stronger, the whole sex as airtravel metaphor works well with me.
Hi ho Silver, Its the Bone ranger! I'll freak u 2 the marrow, comin once, comin twice.

Cheers, can't wait to hear your take onb Purple Rain, Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy Thanks for taking the time to read the thoughts - and for offering a different point of view on International Lover. Maybe I should fasten my seatbelt, put my seat in an upright position and take another trip. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

BlackguitaristZ posted a really nice thread about the 1999 album, too. A couple of years ago. I highly recommend reading it.

A question I am sure many of us have asked time and time again. Thankfully we got to hear them as b-sides. Swa "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

Was there a celebration in 1999? Wasn't the first one in 2000?

I remember as a kid, I had saved my lunch $$ to buy 1999. When I got it, I paid for it all in quarters! The album had an eye on the label instead if the usual WB logo.

Oh, I gotta disagree with you about "International Lover," it's my favourite song on the album! I think 1999 really benefits from having a few songs with "real" instruments. Overall, I have to agree that it is easily one of his very best. Let me also say that I hope that someday the alternate version of "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)" is given a proper release.

This was a phenomenal album. I think this is my favorite Prince album, but that may be because it was the first album that I ever purchased. I'll start by disagreeing on International Lover. As young as I was, this song was so sexy and heartfelt. I have to site the vocal arrangements again. The delivery of International Lover was so deliberate that it can't be overlooked.

After 1999 I couldn't live without music of my choice, not my parent's choice. I had to buy everything he ever made. (Except for the B-sides. I taped those off of Mojo on the radio) I also had a cousin in the know back then so he recommended that I check out the Time and Vanity 6 too. Endless brillance. A great introduction to not only Prince but music. Wonderful when an album like this sparks that passion inside you. Swa "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

I always felt it was like being in the passenger seat, lol - coping all the action in the rearview, lol. But I know what you mean, the whole voyeuristic vibe. Swa "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

Let's Pretend We're Married and Something In The Water - both make my heart race in ways most songs can't. Easily fifteen years ahead of their time, if not more.

Both songs have that dark undercurrent in them which is heightened by the stark electronic arrangement. Both have quite a hypnotic effect almost drawing you further down the rabbit hole so to speak. To this day they sound vibrant and fresh. Swa "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"
