Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic appreciation thread I just dusted off this CD and played it for the first time in maybe 2 or 3 years.

I don't mind that CD at all. Quite dig it at times. TGRES is by far the weakest song on there (and a little embarrassing next to the stronger tunes on there), but I love "So Far, So Pleased", "Baby Knows", "Prettyman", etc. I have an edited version of "Everyday Is A Winding Road". I cut out Larry's "DO YOU LOVE US!?" chant. It's PERFECT, and you never miss it. Thank God for Mixmeister. I DON'T like that Sheryl is all but silent on the Rave IN2 album on her song, but I like some of the tag endings on other songs.

Strange But True was my track. Listening to the lyrics it was like he was reclaiming his name and telling everyone to step off! Fantastic!!!

It's really a refreshing listen... much more unique than some of his more recent releases. The only cut I can't stand is Everyday is a Winding Road. Personally, I think that's arguably the worst song Prince ever put on a CD. His version is hideous in my opinion, and he should have not bothered to record it. Other than that song, I believe the rest of the CD is pretty much brilliant. I'm usually a fan of Prince's slow jams, but Man o'War... although I love the music... Man o' War kind of disappoints me lyrically. "How could you think that I could put something inside of someone that I put inside you?" Hmmm... ummm... easily, maybe... knowing Prince's track record. But I still like the song very much. But in any case, I'm glad I dug this CD out. I love Rave, The Greatest Romance, So Far, So Pleased, The Sun, Moon and Stars... this is just a really good CD... and even Pretty Man to close the CD is Prince in his finest JB mode. Good CD! Dig it out. I rarely see posts about that CD here, but I think it's a very refreshing and BETTER CD, compared to 3121 and Planet Earth.

I like the album. I like the titled track as well. The album in some ways is like a pre-lude of sort of what 'MPLSOUND' album is now. I think this album was a cool way 2 sort of say that tha Prince sound of the 80's never left. He did some cool things and different things with the album at the time that was a bit interesting now that I look at the credits and listen 2 the album. It's a slept on album. It's not as bad as people made it back in 1999.

Very much. It's a lame track, uninspired, and no real climax or anything exciting happening. I'd rather listen to track 4 all day than that one. Ernest L Sewell, IV

I didn't know there were fans brave enough to admit they liked this album other than me. "I'm a lover, not a haitcher"- Pandurito

I recently "rediscovered" this cd recently and thought much the same thing as the original poster. However, I always liked it, there were a few songs that I overlooked before, including Man 'O War, which I love now. I'm also on the side of those who dig TGRES - Great song! Rave is a solid record all around. It's style is all over the place but it's very cohesive. If I had to pick a least favorite track, it would probably be either Undisputed or Hot with U.

Kind of a weird album for me, even in its design. The cover art is awful, probably my least favorite cover of his ever. The title track is terrible; it was much better on Small Club. Undisputed is okay during its first half or so, but I rarely make it past that. TGRES doesn't make any sense. And things are just wildly uneven after that. I despise Baby Knows and I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore, and I think Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do is schmaltzier than Graffiti Bridge. But then there are some real gems on there, including Man'o'war, Strange but True, So Far So Pleased, and Pretty Man. It's a mixed bag overall and hard to really embrace, for me. But the songs that I love on there, I really love.

Tastes are different, to me "The Greatest Romance" is reminding of "7" & "The Most Beautiful Girl..", but ernest, I guess you don't like these great Prince songs either....? Eye LOVE it!! The Greatest Romance is 1 of my faves...there's alot of variation in the album and 4 the most part it is underappreciated! "At first I couldn't find the words to say

I remember in 1999, When Rave came out. Funny thing, it was not well liked by some on the .org. Remember Bart? It was kind of dismissed as a dud.

I just never understood the lyrics to TGRES, "how can you sell a romance"?? weird... I Love "7" (especially the acoustic version), and of course TMBGITW. I actually made a duet mix called "The Most Beautiful U In The World", where I mixed Mayte and Prince's version to create a duet. As far as TGRES, nope. Totally different kind of track. I'd be happy if it wasn't on the album at all, but I still listen. I don't HATE it per se, it just bores the fuckery outta me. To me, it's about his marriage to Mayte, perhaps. He really hyped his romance w/ her, and sold it, in effect on shows like Oprah Winfrey Show and Vibe, etc. Not sure if that overt attention and glorification of their marriage is what led to the downfall of it (it's happened before and continues to). Most of the album is a gentle but firm kiss-off to her anyway. TGRES could be as well. Ernest L Sewell, IV
