"Here" is quickly becoming my MOST played P song EVER! I rarely listen to a song SEVERAL times a day. Even if i LOVE it. As a matter of fact, prior to Here, i don't think i've EVER played a song back to back. I have most of P's entire catalogue and its something about Here that I don't tire of it. Don't know how to explain it, never happened to me b4 with other songs; ones that i liked upon first listen, or the growers (for P or other artists) i think this song is the definition of "instant vintage"

It's an incrredible song from the first beat to the last. I played the song a few hours ago and I still love it. It's easily one of Prince's best songs ever. "I was dreamin when I wrote this 4give me if it goes astray"

Isn't it though? It's incredible. Yes, and it's not ridiculously complex, just original, fits the song, and feels like a classic Prince beat like 17 Days or Nasty Girl.

The way it reverses lyrically 4 the last chorus, going from "I just don't want U here" 2 "I just want U here". It's a tear-jerker, most definitely. Try listening 2 that through a breakup! ~G . [Edited 5/14/09 13:47pm] What a poet.

[Edited 5/14/09 13:47pm] What a poet. Actually, he relays a fairly complex love emotion, expressing the fear of seeing her again, because of how it might make him feel. Then he gives up on that whole evasive notion, and says what he truly feels... So in a sense, yes, quite poetic.

Agreed, but it 'aint Tennyson. that is true, but Tennyson didn't set his words to music, as far as I know. Prince's lyrics do bug me sometimes, but they are not meant to be standalone poetry. The words are given flight by the music, as is the case with even the best lyricists in the world.

Whether Tennyson's poetry was backed with any kind of music, or not, is hardly the point. But, look, all I'm saying is that the song is fine, but let's not get too carried away.

I don't actually disagree with you, I'm only saying most song lyrics aren't great poetry, even great songs with good lyrics
