You must really suck at video games. What if they don't REALLY want to learn to play a real guitar? What if they just want to play a video game? God, you must not let your kids ( if any) play any games. I can hear you now, "No, littly Jimmy, you're not playing Mario Brothers any more, do you plan on being a plumber?"... I don't understand why you're so GLAD he turned it down. If you think Guitar Hero or Rock Band games are crap, then don't buy them. Butt, what do you care if I want to rock out to his music, and don't want to learn how to play a real guitar. He doesn't have to release his whole damn catalog, jeez, ... a few songs would do. Like others are saying, Prince may want people to learn to play a real instrument, but the main reason is the MONEY.

okay the lines r getting blurred here 4 real..1st off mario bros and other games have NOTHING 2 do with music. so just because i enjoy playing mortal kombat that means that i want 2 make a career out of being Raiden? sorry lighting doesn't emit from my hands but i have a actual guitar that i have learned and still play with 2 this day. prince didn't say that no one shouldn't play the game but saying that i's more REWARDING 2 actually pick up a guitar and play it and learn a instrument.

the problem with games like guitar hero and rock band is that it's mostly rock/pop songs instead of encompassing all genres of music. maybe that's down the line but it would great if they did other styles of music.

Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree about the rock/pop overload. However, Rock Band has recently added three cool tracks - James Brown's Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine, Average White Band's Pick Up the Pieces and Earth Wind & Fire's Shining Star. Personally, I was hoping for a "Funk" Band release.

Rock Band's next artist-related release is Beatles: Rock Band.

SOOPER

I've given it a bit of thought previously so forgive me for being long boring and serious razz

I was very dubious about the game and its apparent success and being the eternal cynic when it comes to many popular console games I too thought "What are these easily lead idiots making popular now" but one day i was at a mates place, he had it, gave me a go and it was over, i bought an xbox grabbed a few of the series and didn't spend a great deal of time with it solo, but when friends are round the guitars are nearly always dusted off.

I cant claim to being great at it, but i think from a music fans point of view and not a jaded "i know everything about music" POV. It gives you a new appreciation to the depth complexity of music and imagining playing the real thing boggles your mind, although its mostly mainstream music and sure the genres are limited, you do encounter songs you would never have heard, or at least expected and i've grown to really love the odd guitar hero track or associated track/album that i would have never listened to before i played it.

It's gotta sell records or at least tracks on itunes etc, It'd be interesting if there was any numbers on sales for songs of games featured in guitar hero etc. I really think Prince and other people against it are missing the forest for the trees on the issue. Nobody thinks they're playing real instruments, its a game, with friends, you laugh, listen to kick ass music, tap your fingers away furiously, curse and scream at your inability to have your fingers do what u want them to do, laugh and be merry. Nobody thinks they're musicians when they get 100% wink To me GH is like free advertising for great music. The quality tracks stand out, people talk about the stand out tracks, they're popular again on radio etc.

In interviews etc Prince often pays lip service to kids getting into music and learning an instrument etc this would go a long way to proving it, I think Guitar Hero has done great things introducing kids to music they'd have otherwise never heard. Get past the "how much can i make" angle and look at it as a new avenue to inspire kids who'd normally get no exposure to your music beyond the pop pap. And i know as well as you all do there's odd Prince b-sides and non single "filler" that would blow people away.

Also the idea comes to mind of having as other artists have, live or alternate versions of songs.. only on GH? You'd all be on your bikes down to buy a console/copy quick as a wink if he can get $77 out of us for a website, a few mp3's and youtube vids razz

Make it plain: if everything prince does was motivated by money he would:
1. Charge more than 12.00 for 3 new cds
2. Charge way more 4 attending his concerts as he is considered one of the BEST live performers alive
3. Exploit his remasters
4. Exploit his vault material
.....just 2 name a few.

1. I'm sure that was something that was negotiated with Target (based on the "market" and other related "exclusive" artist deals). Then again, he sure has done a lot to promote the fact that it's a Target "exclusive". Right? I mean, Ellen directed people to Lotusfail.com to find out "how to purchase it". Tavis too said it was available at Lotusflower.com (MULTIPLE times). The only person that mentioned Target was Leno.

I know, I know, here come the "But, but, but...Prince isn't responsible for what other people SAY" reasoning. You're right. Which is why he corrected 'em (ala Dolly Parton on Dave) and told the audience they could also get it at Target - at a $65 savings. Oh wait. No. That's not right. He did nothing of the sort. He had them pimp his website where they'd have to spend $77 to get it (assuming they were only looking for Lotusflower).

2. Best live performers alive? No doubt (when he's not doing "Las Vegas style" revue shows). However, I remember the days when he was charging $125 for a show at a nightclub[/b]. Let's wait for a [i]current US tour before we declare he's looking out for the fans.

3. If he owned his masters, i'm damn near positive he'd be exploiting his remasters. However, i'm sure his hatred for making WB $$$ supersedes making $$$ for himself.

4. This, I agree with. Perhaps he realize this is last resort. There are some old fans who have washed their hands clean of Prince, but would eagerly pay to get their hands on some of the stuff in the vault and he realizes this (as long as it wasn't released as a "new master").

So, again, based on his immediate initial response to Tavis' question, I agree with truefunksoldier. Kinda like those "word association" tests people do - they say something and then want you to say the first thing that comes to your mind. Prince's immediate response to a "What do you make of Guitar Hero" question? $$$. Now, if Tavis asked him "Did Activision approach you to be part of Guitar Hero", I could understand his response.

Of course, these are my opinions, beliefs and interpretations -- YMMV.

I think Prince should reconsider this one. Guitar Hero has created interest in playing guitar. I see young kids these days playing guitar as good as many older folks. I hear of people actual buying real guitars and starting up lessons after gaming on Guitar Hero. IMO It has open kids up to a world of music that they will not hear on radio. And it's a better game than kill kill kill games.

I don't believe the criticism of Prince not allowing clearance stems from the love of the game and children..

I think it stems from some angry, bitter Prince.org folk... lol lol lol

I'm sure if he did allow "Guitar Hero" to use "Diamons & Pearls", he would still be hated for making the other choice.

Inspire people to create the new, and not rely on the past. He turned down good $$$$.

They weren't going to use "Diamon(d)s& Pearls", it was just the OP's euphemism for Activison's offer.

And, let's refrain from referring to Prince not relying on the past...we know that's not his MO - contrary to what he says.

I've read that there's a game in development where you'll use a real guitar somehow. I'm not sure how it will work technically, but hopefully it will be more educational than GH.

Prince said once (Guitar World magazine)

"I always wanted to be thought of as a guitarist. But you have a hit, and you know what happens´.

Well, it´s his decision and he does what he wants with his music. I only think that this game would bring more kids to know his music and know how good he is on guitar.

At least, I m happy he is playing lots of guitars in the last years and the world is beginning to realize that he is more than a ´pop singer´.

As stated 307 times here, Guitar Hero/Rock Band are not meant to replace actual guitars, it's just to play out a fantasy - to feel like you're part of your favorite band, or jamming along with James Brown - it's fun. Playing acoustic in your bedroom sometimes doesn't excite the way jumping around your living room while [insert band name] is backing you up smile

Plus, I can't teach my wife bass, my son drums, and my dog to sing vocals while I play real guitar and then we all have a jam session every night. The neighbors would kill us.

If Prince was so interested in us learning the real music, he'd release his damn sheet music already.

I had been hoping for a Prince version for Guitar Hero. My son & I were talking in the car while listening to Lotusflow3r about all of the songs on that CD that would be great songs for Guitar Hero & Rock band.

My son and his friends all love that game and he along with one of his friends have since bought a guitar and play it as much or more than they play the video game. My son even used his own money. Guitar Hero & Rock Band have had that kind of effect on many young children around the world so his reason for not wanting to be a part of the game just doesn't make sense.

Prince just can't go along with a great idea if he is not the one who thought of it. Such a knucklehead sometimes.

You can't force a kid to learn it. Seems like these kids you ask at the store wouldnt be interested in learning to play regardless if they were playing the game or not, at least they would be listining and playing to good Prince music. I guess from a gamers standpoint, not a musicians, I want to play his songs. lol
