Activision may be able to throw their fat rolls of cash at bands like Metallica and Aerosmith, but there's one man who was approached by the company and turned them down: Prince.
Yes, the man who is perhaps the greatest living American says in an interview with Tavis Smiley that Activision once approached him over the series (presumably for downloadable content), offering cash money in return for licensing rights.
And Prince said no dice.
"I ain't mad at them. I hear it made, like, $2 billion and they came to us and offered us a very small portion of that. But I just think it's more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar", he told Smiley.
"It's a tough instrument — it's not easy. It took me a long time, and it was frustrating at first. And you just have to stick with it, and it's cool for people who don't have time to learn the chords or ain't interested in it, but to play music is one of the greatest things."
"To create something from nothing is one of the greatest feelings, and I would — I don't know, I wish it upon everybody. It's heaven."
Don't get mad. It's Prince.

Right On Prince!!!!! smile i LOVE u Prince, i agree wholeheartedly. Thats why i didn't buy Guitar Hero, because i'd rather my kids pick up and learn to play the real instrument!!!!! Right On!!!!! smile smile

I'd rather my kids be doctors and lawyers but that aint happening.. stop trying to control people and let a game be a game.. whatever happened to the word fantasy.. Prince never makes any sense when he speaks, and when he speaks all he talks about is the money he makes or can make out of it.. just like a music executive..

when is he going to adopt some kids or something, or have some kids.. he can produce a million and one songs but not an offspring..

Obviously.

But children/teens would be positively exposed to him (and potentially inspired by his music) if he allowed at least one of his rock-oriented hits to be included. Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, The Who, Journey, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Bowie, other older rock musicians...they're all aware of this.

Bottom line, it's just a video game. A chance for more people, who normally wouldnt hear him, to here his music, if a kid wants to learn to play a real instrument then they'll take the time. You can't force a kid to learn it. Seems like these kids you ask at the store wouldnt be interested in learning to play regardless if they were playing the game or not, at least they would be listining and playing to good Prince music. I guess from a gamers standpoint, not a musicians, I want to play his songs. lol

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

To be honest, I've enjoyed all of these artist and their work over the years, but none of them are as talented as Prince when it comes to the guitar or piano-yeah I said it lol I've rocked out lol to Bon Jovi, Aerosmith (Steven drool ) and the Peppers, but none are as unique as Prince.

I actually think it would be very valuable for kids to know that.

Especially in the U.S., people are expecting instant everything.

I see Prince's point of view regarding this, however, I can also completely see Prince saying no to this because it would give others a degree of control over his music. (Hell, and maybe they didn't offer enough $$ on top of that!)
I'm firmly planted in denial

I agree with Prince about how it feels to play music. It's like an adrenaline rush when you're creating and performing. Guitar Hero is fun but playing the real thing is much more fulfilling. Even for cats like me who isn't good at it, yet... cool

Agreed! When I played music and actually got it right, I could not BELIEVE I was making it happen. It was a very cool feeling.

That's all I think it's about. I don't believe he's concerned with children learning and playing music more than his problem with the notion of Activision/Harmonix Music Systems and consumers having control over the use of his song(s) in the games. I bet the idea of people "covering" his songs during gameplay is what bothers him, even though they're just simulations, LOL. But, whatever.

I don't know, I think it wouldn't have been such a bad idea. Course you're not playing a real guitar, butt it is fun to think you are, and for some kids, it might be fun enough to want to learn how to play a real guitar or drums. Prince has A LOT of songs I would want to pretend play. Just from playing rock bands one and two I've heard a lot of songs that I had never heard before, that I now like. It could be a good way, for people who have never heard him, to get a feel of his music.

very interesting take on it, I have mixed feelings now....lol My kids have the game, 7 and 9. I have a real piano in the basement tho...hehehe, I really wish I could play. I feel Its too late for me but maybe them. Peace and Love
