Nothing Compares 2 U
Manic Monday

Love, Thy Will Be Done
Screams Of Passion
Love Bizzare

I hear Manic Monday pretty often on german radio stations
and Prince never get mentioned. Most non Prince fans don´t
even know that Manic Monday and Nothing Compares are Prince
compositions...

Honorable mention to "The Dance Electric"

Although I'd love to hear him sing "Sugar Walls".

And why does everyone forget "You're My Love" from Kenny Rogers? I love that song.

I'd have to disagree with that. People know that Prince had something to do with "Nothing Compares 2 U". It would seem a lot know by now that Prince wrote "Manic Monday". Hell, even at the time it was a hit, people were talking in the news about "Christopher" and that it was really Prince.

I think that Sugar Walls could have easily been re-worked for Prince to have kept it. He could have just changed it around to the 2nd person rather than the 1st person. Instead of "take a ride inside MY sugar walls" he could have sung " I want to take a ride inside YOUR sugar walls."

The same type of thing would happen if he did Manic Monday when it goes "I was kissing Valentino."

-I was going to put "Nothing Compares 2" on my list but now that I think about it, Prince made the right choice in giving it to Sinead. I don't think anyone could have sang that song better or made it as big of a hit as it became.

prince didn't give it 2 sinead..he gave it 2 the group the family. sinead's manager at the time steve fargnoli suggested 2 sinead that she do the song ..and she butchered it!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The Family recorded it first, and that version is by far the best version. It even trumps Prince's live take from The Hits/The B-sides. Sinead murdered it, in a bad way.

This deserves a sweet discussion. The Family's version is breathtaking, weird, original. Sinead made a perfect popsong out of it. Prince felt he needed to 'take back' his song by covering Sinead's version ever since instead of playing his own version.

Oh, and Prince should have never given away the song 'best of you' to the Foo Fighters...

Let's not forget "covering" means the song was already recorded by one artist (possibly the original), and then someone else does it. The Family were the first to put the song out, so Sinead covered them, and Prince finally recorded his own version. I guess you COULD say he covered his own song, in a weird idealism.

And that version you speak of was just an earlier version. St. Paul had it on his site for quite a while way back when. Also remember that Prince was in an anti-bass mood during 1985, so songs like "Mutiny", "High Fashion", "Nothing Compares 2 U", and other tracks had the bass (or other instrumentation) stripped from them. The bass versions of "Mutiny" and "High Fashion" are out there, and pretty damn funky. Even Eric Leeds had commented how funky those tracks were and hated that Prince took the bass out of them. I kind of like the album version of NC2U though. It fits the album better. Of course, if Prince left the songs intact, we probably couldn't image a "stripped down" version of the album. It's all perspective, I suppose.
