They really polished up the old bootlegs nicely, but left this classic out. sad

I love this track and first had it in '90, when it was circulating as "Welcome to the Ratrace".

I found the bootleg about the same time entitled "Crucial" and remember that it was called "Welcome to the Ratrace". I prefer that title actually.

In A Large Room With No Light

Lana drew a picture in school 2day
One that made her mother cry
A picture of a woman with a drink in her hand

Standing by a child with no eyes
Washington reaction based upon revenge
Babies blown 2 kingdom come

Damn the logic
Cartoon characters look better when they're on the run
Danny dropped the dime on his girlfriend

He said he didn't wanna go 2 jail alone
The seed lives in the same mind

With the thought that says we all should be stoned
And people lookin' 4 angels in the sky

Whenever they're broken-hearted
Love is grown, seeds are sown
A fire don't burn unless it's started
Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
That aren't right
Everytime U wake up there's a little motherfucker
Talkin' big stuff in your face (Are U happy?)
U only get the kind of people that open their mouth
just 2 swap feet
Welcome 2 the rat race
Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
That aren't right

Oh, if U could just pass your history class
Maybe life would be alright
Until then U'll be lookin' 4 a penny

In a large room with no light
Yeah!
Life {repeat 2 fade}

Is it me or does he not write lyrics like this anymore? (not just referring to "motherfucker" either)

I had that bootleg back in the day smile

Didn't it also have "moonbeam levels" listed as "A Better Place to Die"? Or maybe that was a different bootleg...

I think he does, recent examples of interesting and non-literal symbolic lyrics might be Colonized Mind or All The Midnights In The World?

Mine was listed as a recording with Miles Davis but apparently was not really Miles. It didn't have "A better place to die" though. It had "Power Fantastic", two versions of Crucial, one with sax solo, one with guitar solo that was later released. It had "Witness for the Prosecution", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cant Stop" and "We Can Funk"(both later on Graffiti Bridge but were better versions even though they were not mastered. "We Can Funk" was a much better track before George Clinton was added to it). The album ended with an instrumental trumpet solo called "H Man" I believe.

Yeah, that's the one I had too.

There was another one called "Crystal Ball" that I think had "A Better Place to Die" along with things like "A Place in Heaven," "Wonderful Ass", "Old Friends 4 Sale," etc. Then I think I had one that was actually called "A Better Place to Die," can't remember what all was on it. I got rid of those old bootleg CDs ages ago.

LOL you are stupid(I mean that in a funny way)

I think he might be getting back to the real creative Prince

if you look at who he had in his camp when he wrote In A Large Room With No Light, it helps 2 understand.

That 2 me has a lot to do with music/lyrical output.
If you have people in your camp who aren't song writers or everyone is into the same(1 style) of music your not going to get a lot of collaboration that enhances your music

When he did this song he had:Wendy & Lisa, Susannah, Jill Jones, Sheila E Eric Leeds Dr Fink (the Revolution whole played on the song except 4 Bobby Z)

I'm guessing, with all the sound issues and complaints by people about the show, that there's next to no chance of this being put on the site for our enjoyment (if there was any chance in the first place).....
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

That's the one. Did you also have Chocolate Box? That was the name of the album and it had All Day All Night, We Can Funk etc on it. Strange how Chocolate Box is now its own song some 20 years later.

Without the horns.... No.

Spend some $$$$. Hire the horns and a full band (+ guitar player). New horns in fact. Provide opportunity.
