What idiot dug this thread back up...??

I was asking the same question.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Well I'm glad someone else got around to this post so I don't have to write the whole argument.

I agree with the original poster.

I don't think that 1999 became a funk masterpiece because of the way Prince programmed the linn drum, though. For me it's always been about the content of the songs. They have message and emotion and depth, and that is what inspires the good album to follow.

What I hear on MPLSoUND is an attempt to attach content that is not heartfelt at all to some previously existing decent funky beats and grooves. But that doesn't make a masterpiece. It sounds... empty.

In fact what I think MPLSoUND is (intentional or not) is proof that Prince should not be trying to go backward, even if it seems delicious to us fans in theory. It's almost like it's an album that is meant to be side by side with LOTUSFLOW3R. While MPLSoUND can have it's funky moments (and at least old skool company on Jay Leno was CRAZY funky.... sad it doesn't have the same flow on the record), I can't help like this feels like... the really bad parts of the Emacipation era. That stuff you know just was... iffy at best. In fact, I'm pretty sure "Never Be Another Like Me" is another prince song from the mid or late 90s that I just can't put my finger on. But add a Linn and a Woooo at the beginning and now we are partying like 1999? No.

I hear references to the internet all over MPLSoUND too. Though there are a couple good tracks, I feel like this is what Prince gave his fans who were always wishing for the good old days, in that same way he gave WB some mediocre tracks at the end. Not all bad, but not much effort either.

And then..., LOTUSFLOW3R, someone said not a masterpiece but compared to MPLSoUND it seems like it. I can't agree more.
LOTUSFLOW3R isn't the best thing I ever heard, but there are many, MANY songs that are good... and you can tell it's from the heart. Those songs do have content, really try to deal with various issues, and the good instrumentation does indeed follow.

If you find yourself really really loving MPLSoUND, ask yourself why. Do you really want new musical experiences, or do you just want the good old days?

Nice post.

I agree that it's the content, not the drum programming, that counts. It's the emotion, the themes, the attitude that made 1999 what it is. The instrumentation is just dressing. The real bread and butter is the apocalyptic imagery, the eerie soundscapes, the dark, hopeless atmosphere. It's an intense ride, that album.

Mplsound is quaint by comparison. It more or less covers the same emotional territory as Diamonds and Pearls. Prince tells us he's unique ("Thunder," "There'll never be another like me"). His milkshake brings all the fams to the yard ("Daddy Pop," "Chocolate Box"). He gives himself a pep talk ("Cream," "Better With Time"). He spends an awful lot of time psyching himself up, boosting his own confidence. The whole thing sounds like a self-doubting prima donna reciting his self-affirmation mantra in front of a mirror. Prince is gazing at his reflection, saying, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, Salma Hayek likes me!"
