best tracks so far:

back to the lotus

I like about 5 songs on the album, there are others that are good too but Im not hugely into the album as a whole.I am happy about some of the great guitar jams on this album there is some really nice stuff here.
I think Prince as always is great muscician who technically has put out a great album here but stylistically a lot of his stuff hasnt appealed to me for many years, I still find stuff that I really do enjoy and would still see him live if I had the oppurtunity. Im not really into the overly produced dance music, Im more into songs and jams and even pop songs or the good straight out funk or older style cold funk or older style sexy funk pop etc but the jerky overly produced dance music the type of stuff you are likely to hear in a club is not really my thing.

I havnt listened to Minneapolis sound too much but so far when Ive browsed through it I havnt found it overly captivating, will have to give it few more spins.

While Lotusflower is easier to stomach than the one trick, three legged, pony of Mplsound, it definitely hits the brakes quickly with The Morning After and the incredibly bad 4ever. They sound like rejects from an animated feature. Prince is obviously notorious for not sticking to one sound on his records, but he really shoots himself in the foot by trying to stick these two pop-clunkers on what is otherwise a step in the right direction of making an organic rock-pop album.

I agree about these two tracks. 4Ever is almost a parody of a love song. It's embarrassing to hear a middle aged man able to offer up nothing more than a series of one-dimensional rhyming lyrics. "I know, I know. Hips....rhymes with lips! Laugh? Hmm. Ooh I've got it! Bath!" It's very poor writing, and it has a lazy hook reminiscent of The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and Cinnamon Girl.

yes, terrible & lazy; I hate those lips & hips rhymes! Especially at the end where he says "I don't want to kiss your lips until I get to _____ your hips." It sounds contrary to what the entire song is saying.

And worse yet, he manages to make it listenable by virtue of a great performance lol

I am happy that Prince still makes music and plays live but after more listens
on the whole I think I would categorise these albums into the Prince mediocre albums category.
In certain parts of the album I feel hopeful excited and maybe even inspired but all of that gets lost in other tracks that really dont hold much appeal.
I dont wanna be negative and into criticism and maybe some folks go overboard but some people here seem to shoot down anyone who says anything critical, I think anything you pay for you have the right to have a critical oppinion about, same thing when you pay for meal at a restaurant afterwards you either say "it was great" or "it sucked" or "it was ok", for me I would say this recent output from Prince is not great, but "it was ok".
I am happy to accept it can be all subjective, obviously Prince is a great muscician etc etc and can be very good songwriter imo but much of the stuff presented here I cant get into stylistically and as mentioned many ridiculous lyrics and lines. I just recently got the Truth C.D, I rate that on the whole as much more interesting listening than this recent offering.
I think what Im realising is to get the best out of Prince one really has to make ones own compilation C.D of favourite tracks, its getting harder and harder to have a Prince album you can really dig all way through on the whole.

I'm hearing it differetly.
Like Prince realizes his ideal is in the spiritual but he is still living in a sensual/material world.
Prince can change the lyrics but U can't take the funky, raw, sexiness out of guitar yes

maybe, sort of like how he flips the lyric on Here to "I just want U here"

But even so, why doesn't he want to kiss her lips? Isn't that still weird even from a sensual point of view?

I just want to say that I've heard LOtUSFLOW3R once now, and I LOVE it.

I don't know how to put it or what to say about it. It's fascinating. Fascinating!

He touches me in new ways. It's eclectic but still a unity.

It's a bit like he's been looking at his past, chewing on it for a big while and spitting out something fresh and new.

There's also some return of testosteron, it seems... smile

Where does he say that he doesn't want to kiss her lips question

He's singing that if he 'never gets to kiss her lips' he has '4ever' and "Eternity is just one kiss away...a Million 2morrows.....

Then he suggests that she quit looking at him 'like that love2 unless she wants him to bite that' foodnow guitar

Maybe he's just being honest saying that it would be too tempting, too dangerouse to kiss those lips if he wasn't going to hit those hips. One thing leads to another

after trying 2 figure out the lead lines 2 both wall of berlin and dreamer ..i had 2 spin those tracks this morning guitar

so 4 loutsflow3r 2 provoke that emotion from me after 3 weeks, is a good sign of a good album 4 me thumbs up!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Big fat disappointment. Prince promised a guitar album, but I should have known that wouldn't mean a ROCK album.

Mediocre, watered-down Jazz crap. We've already heard the good tracks from this disk. Hell, MPLSound feels more genuine than Lotusflow3r - and it's all synthetic.
I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

This is a very good album. I've been listening to it for 3 days now and I gotta come back and say more. Real quick, Feel better is the banger. Never heard him deal w/ so many issues so well. Ever had your azz kicked on a record? Wow.lol $ is my summer anthem I do believe and the guitar jams are great. Colonized Mind is off the meter. Hes hasnt been this clear, topical, and right since. SOTT.

Crimson & Clover is awesome. I love the submerged sound to his vocals and the hazy feel to it; very dream-like.

The album feels old. Not in the 'heard it before' way, though that's definitely there, but more in the geriatric variety. It seems made for old people. Maybe some Prince fans are old, but come on - that's not what we expect from this guy. We expect fresh and interesting.

He constantly seems to be rehashing other people's sounds which isn't something I want from Prince. Dreamer, as cool as it is, sounds like his tribute to Jimi Hendrix. I still love 'Colonized Mind' and 'Wall of Berlin' but i find myself gravitating to those tracks and painfully forcing myself to listen to the others.

There's few fresh things on Lotusflow3r and the Man has given us far better guitar albums than this, C&D being a big stand-out in this regard. This whole thing feels like mediocre elevator jazz, and the more I listen to it, the less I like it.

$, actually, is a big exception. I sorta' love this song biggrin

Compared to MPLSound, which I have really grown to love. MPLSound just seems like Prince having fun, getting down, playing around. Maybe he was doing the same on Lotusflow3r, but the ultimate result was something less than stellar.

I was playing this @ a party and my friends were wanting the original version to be played, and I am a polite hostess so I didn't say how annoying it was that they preferred to hear the other one, when Prince's version is so much more way cooler, but we did play the original one and all sung along.....

I don't know if anyone discussed the opening and closing tracks. I really love From the Lotus and Back Into the Lotus. I didn't care for how 3121 ended, especially after the dramatic ending of the Dance, Get on the Boat seemed kind of weak, and I thought Planet Earth should have ended with, well, Planet Earth..but LotusFlower has a kick ass opening and ending, to the point where I don't even want it to end. cool

My thing on disc 2 and 3 is that you hear alot of the tunes melo's from past songs he's done which i think is awesome. Takes me back to when I heard the song itself. Don't know of any other artist that has done this and yet brings them back with something new. The lyrics on a few are deep. But other than that I'm really not into the lyrics on the rest, just the sounds. cool

I am enjoying this cd.

Colonized Mind - Love the blues/rock fusion in this song and the lyrics
Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful - Full of funk, reminds me a little, bit "Cameo".
$ - Love the Chuck Berry flavor in this one - has a 50s sound
Dreamer - What can I say? Bold, love the lyrics and the lightness of the social, yet political message. This track is totally awesome. love the rock/blues fusion on this track, especially the climax at the end..lawd have mercy. guitar guitar
