grandpa

lol I remember mixtapes well, I still do them only now it's mp3 compilations for people's ipods biggrin

I like the tracks running together, but the Boom/Morning After or C&C cut is really abrupt. Reminds me of Girls & Boys into Life Can Be So Nice.

LOTUSFLOW3R continues to grow on me. Even songs like the closing track are beginning to make sense.

Colonized Mind in particular sounds better every time. I love the trance-like quality in his vocals, and that guitar just screams melancholic anguish throughout. The climax is brilliant too.

As I'm listening to Lotusflow3r right now, I realizing that music on here sounds mature, if that makes any sense. There is just something about this CD that just makes it sounds like its "Grown Folks" music. I feel strange writing that lol. Maybe it's the guitar that just does it or me turning 30, I don't know but this is just a new thing I've found with this CD as I'm playing it again and it's making the experience that much more satisfying. music

The verses are far too stuttery in this version. The melody doesn't really get a chance to flow. The song only just survives it. Another song of lesser quality wouldn't have.

Thankfully we have the original.

In the beginning I thought the same thing. But as I've continued to listen to the whole set and come to fully appreciate how strong ALL THREE albums are, I love it as part of this collection now. IMO, "LotusFlow3r" (the full 31-track project) is the strongest outpouring of music we've ever gotten from Prince at one time in his entire career. There's not a single song I consider obvious filler across the whole thing -- and only two that I rate less than "very good" ("Another Like Me" and "Immersion"...all of the LotusFlow3r" album is outstanding). This is an historic release that will grow and grow in stature over the years.

My thoughts...

“Boom” is a decent track. Although, the version I have cuts off at 3:19 into the song (word is it was a glitch in the upload which they’re supposed to fix) 6/10

“The Morning After” sounds like a throwaway track he wrote while brushing his teeth one morning. 4/10

“4Ever”, while not his best mid-tempo production isn’t bad and even though it’s full of cliches…I can dig it. 7/10

“Colonized Mind” : I’ve been listening to this one for a couple of months now…and I STILL can’t get into it. 2/10

“Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful” : Wha? I mean…ya got the horns back in this one, Prince…but…a funky horn line does not make a good song. 3/10

“Love Like Jazz” : zzzzz. Are you trying to put me to sleep with this one? 2/10

“77 Beverly Park” It’s an interesting instrumental. And I’ve always dug his instrumental tracks. Still…it’s nothing I haven’t heard from him before. 6/10

“Wall Of Berlin” What? Seriously. 2/10

“$” I…I…I just don’t know. Here is where you start wondering, “Is this the best ya got?” 2/10

“Dreamer” The opening sounds like he’s channeling Hendrix in a Voodo Chile kinda way…and then it kinda trails off into mediocrity. 5/10

“Back To The Lotus” The most experimental cut. A lot of good heavy guitar work. But, again…nothing groundbreaking. 4/10

After one full trip through Lotusflow3r, let me give this 4 out of 5 stars. I'm am really digging this record. I thought that Planet Earth would be his final good album, so I'm very pleasantly surprised with this one. The 1st 3 tracks are superb, in my opinion. I absolutely love the verses in "Boom", but wish that he'd done more with a chorus. The segue into "Crimson and Clover" was a little rough, but I'll live with it. "4ever" sounds really out of place on this album, and I'm not liking it too much. I'd never given "Colonized Mind" or "Wall of Berlin" many listens when they first leaked, but I am truly enjoying them now, and I really like "$" for some reason. It's nothing spectacular, but man, it's grown on me quickly. And of course, "Dreamer" is quite the six-string workout. Overall, very well done, Prince. I wish MPLsound was quite as satisfying for me.

For me LotusFlow3r is a very good album but falls short of a great album it so nearly could have been (I waited until I had listened to it maybe 30 times before saying that as I wanted to see if everything on it would grow on me).

Maybe that is to do with expectations but I was thinking we were finally getting the 100% genuine all out Rock album that many (though not all) fans have been asking for (with MPLSound catering for the funk).

Frankly there are two tracks I can live without on the album (although I like them well enough for b-sides)...77 Beverley Park and Love Like Jazz.

If they could have been replaced with a couple of uptempo pop-rockers like Fury, or Guitar or Chaos & Disorder then this album would have been awesome.

As it stands my playlist drops the two aforementioned songs and replaces them with "Dance 4 Me" and "Here" with the sequencing as follows:

From The Lotus
Boom
Crimson & Clover
The Morning After
4Ever
Colonized Mind
Feel Better, Fell Good, Feel Wonderful
Dance 4 Me
Wall Of Berlin
$
Here
Dreamer
Back To The Lotus

and this works VERY nicely thank you very much cool

for my money the album version is far superior to the demo. the horns help. it approaches the '93 live sound. needs a rosie gaines guest vocal to be complete. this is the kind of almost-rap that would have sounded really good in '91.
[Edited 3/31/09 18:44pm]

Ok, that's what's different. I remember hearing the "Feel Better,Feel Good..." demo over a year ago and not being really thrilled. But on the album it's ok. Not something I'd listen to over and over, but I wouldn't jump for the skip button.
