First thing I thought when I listened to Planet earth was how childish it sounded. The hokey environmentalism, naive anti-war message, and there's a nursery rhyme/children's song vibe throughout, especially 'All The Midnights.'

And what's up with the play by play 'getting ready for a big date/big night out' thing? Prince has done that with 3121, Life of the Party, Incense and Candles, Mr. Goodnight, There Will Never B Another Like Me. It's kinda played out, innit? They say write what you know, and if that's the case Prince must spend all day getting ready, primping and prepping, fussing and planning. Listen to how much detail Mr. Goodnight goes into when describing how he pampers his date. It's a rigidly planned operation of wealth porn. It's laden with intoxicating and luxurious amenities, but zero spontaneity, zero intimacy.

And Prince claims to know exactly what a woman wants on 'Future Baby Mama.' According to P, women want their girlfriends to hate them. And on 'The 1 U Wanna C' he says 'eye no u ain't no concubine.' But that's exactly what he's soliciting. He's flashing his wealth around, calling for a woman who wants to be ensconced in riches to make her friends jealous. It's a terribly shallow look at women and romance.

Planet Earth is the album the narrator of 'Movie Star' would make. It's got the environmental records that's supposed to make you horny, it's got the conspicuous spending of cash, and the puerile misogyny. It's more advertisement than art, a personal want ad: Rock star seeking skank. Prince is pimping his lifestyle to some gold digger, promising her the empty pleasures of wealth and the privilege of being ranked somewhere beneath his guitar in importance.

LMAO. I like your opinion on it. I don't agree with it all, but the point about Movie Star's environmental records was spot on! lol

I try and imagine what reception this album would've got had it been promoted in a similar way to 3121. I think a lot of US fans who liked that high profile and by-numbers dance tracks like Black Sweat might've taken to the LP more had Prince done the rounds of US TV performing Guitar and Chelsea Rodgers.

what is there 2 NOT like about this album?
well balanced with sommink 4 everyone, we have slowies, funk, mush, rap, sex, controversy, style, guitar, romance, attitude, hoedown, glowstix, hats & performance etc kaliedoscope of heavenly bliss etc
associated with a fk off tour, plus free music & sexiest hats 2 boot & don't 4get the book, videos & symbol stage, bootlegs & skyfootage
the album art is so brave
a perfect reflection on a NEW & rivetting era... & this was HOTashisass!
a new era in '07..this wasn't '87 etc..gotta wanna evolve when you're a princed out fan
& he gave it everything as always,
..a hotbed of glam so totally pimpedout in a way only prince could..gotta admire him 4 that alone
the songs are fun & just bloody gawjus, each one holds a special place in my heart & above all makes me smile cuz it's like he wasn't really trying & yet had success
Plant Earth, addresses relevant earthly issues, love how it builds in2 the guitar just sweeps me away from the agro that is earth

Guitar, it's a great riff. i don't belive he pinched it & the guitar dance memorable & fun 2 try after a few sherrys

SHOE, cool video & voluptious beauty 4 the guys. singing the highest notes must put hairs on his chest

The One U Wanna C, some of his best lyrics EVER

Future Baby M, shhhizzling, this won some award

Mr Goodnight, i'm sure bet he is, only he can claim the title, come on, this is a funny song, talk about cocksure! If being flash was an olympic sport, he'd be hanging weights off his flashness

All The Midnights, sweet tune, a songs guys wish they could sing 2 their women, but afraid of looking unmacho...prince getting his softie on

Chelsea Rogers, he practically gave the song 2 shelby, he's so gen! & chelsea rogers remains a musal mystery never 2 be cracked

Lion of Judah, seems like prince getting fueled by his inner macho. wading through a testosterone slick & opening bottles of beer with his balls he can say wtf he likes

Resolution, sounds like he finally dawned they'll never be world peace, the upbeat tune trying 2 make light of very sad realisation not everyone can get love in their hearts

As someone who actually purchased the cd, I can say for the most part I like all of it. It is Prince's work. I appreciate his work.

Guitar - Reminded me of some clubbing days/fun (luv his playing)

Somewhere - for an abused/ignored person the lyrics got to me,gave me hope

The 1 U Wanna C - Liked it cuz I could sing it to the person who ignores me the
most - plus it made for a fun fantasy & gave me confidence

I'm with Tame about some others seeming to written for a certain person, maybe Chelsea at the time?

So maybe for the general music professionals it didn't work for them, but I believe there are many regular people who enjoy it just fine. Thank you Prince
No matter what U say or do
I will always appreciate U 4 U
U r amazing and U never stop working
Luv each day, ignore the critics lurking

It's a Prince album on cruise control. Musicology was Prince working up to something, 3121 was Prince showing us that he still "got it" and Planet Earth was something to keep us happy until his next project. Prince had a three album idea in mind with the 3 mentioned above, but now I think he's going into a new project and in a new direction. So with all that said, Planet Earth is a basic, enjoy this filler while I'm going towards my new project.

I think it's one of his better albums. It has some fantastic songs on there like "Lion Of Judah", "The One U Wanna C", "Guitar" and "Somewhere Here On Earth". I think that the last track shows a new, different side of Prince. It's too bad that the album didn't too better sales wise than it did.

I'm a longtime fan (since "1999") but haven't posted very much. I will still say that people who come up with comments like "It's crap" etc are not true Prince fans anymore. Prince has gone thru many changes thru the years so some people may have liked him at a time and may not like him now.

Very much looking forward to the new albums this year, especially Lotusflow3r.

The777Man

whofarted

First who died and said that you get to judge who is and is not a Prince fan anymore because they don't like one album. Let's be real here its an opinion ONLY. If I recall there are many who didn't like ATWIAD but ended up liking it later. AND there are LOTS who have been fans since 1999 and before as well. Some liked some or all his albums some didn't so no need to put the ones who didn't like PE in the non fan category talk to the hand

I was directing this at the people who said that PE is "crap" etc. No of Prince's albums are crap. We all like some albums more and some less. I just really don't like the idea of things being reffered to as crap. So in MY opinion, people who express themselves that way, are not current Prince fans. They may be a fan of previous era of Prince but not of current day Prince.

I think it's a great album.

Lots of diversity on the record. The only thing I might have changed was to rearrange the track listing a bit. I don't think I would have started with a slow epic piece as the opener. But that's just me.

Lion of Judah, Resolution are incredible to me. I love the vibe. Guitar, Future Baby Mama are pop gems but I think The One U Want 2 C is one of his strongest pop tunes in a while.

I'm looking forward to the new material. cool

Prince giving us Planet Earth was like Gordon Ramsey giving you a bologna sandwich. You know what the man is capable of, but he gave you a bologna sandwich. At best, if you're really really really hungry, you would gobble that bitch up and still be hungry. At best. Unfortunately, for those of us used to fine cuisine, the bologna sandwich doesn't cut it.

It's not a bad album in technical terms, but it's very difficult to digest the new stuff when you've spent 20+ years fine dining on the old stuff.

This album has been in my car stereo since I got it for 'free' with the O2 concert. I never get bored of it like I did with the last coupla albums. I can't explain why i like it, but I do. it seems to effortlessly flow from one style to the next and not sound too jarring like on musicology or 3121 - my wife has only just said (after more than a year!!!!) maybe we should change the cd. So I hate to say it but this is probably my fave COMMERCIALLY RELEASED album since Emancipation.

I enjoy the album overall. I prefer it to Musicology, but don't like it as much as 3121. There are 4 songs on it that I absolutely adore: the fiery, guttural and emotive "Lion of Judah" first and foremost, but also "Planet Earth", "The One U Wanna C" and "Somewhere Here on Earth".

The only tracks I dislike are "Guitar" (mostly for his bratty vocals) and "Future Baby Mama" (because I don't like neo-soul and I cringe when Prince tries to sound hip), but hey, I'll take them over "Mellow" any day! Some of the lyrics are a bit off-putting- "must be baptized according to the master plan before she give up the good thing" sounds like Prince is pimping poor Chelsea out to any perv willing to convert.

The album is by and large a safe listen and isn't really challenging outside of "Lion of Judah". At this point, I'm ok with that. Prince has already taught me bent the parameters so much that he's earned the right to rest on his laurels a bit.

Planet Earth, i understand the dislike of the album but i like several things about it:

Title track - i like the arrangement, atypical and unexpected which i always like. that could never be called formulaic. and i understand the lyrics. call it hokey environmentalism if u want but its communicating the idea of what many call "karma" or biblically, reaping and sowing, lots of validity to it, talks about our stewardship of the land and the consequences if we don't do better. God haters will not like the idea of the song.

Guitar - ok, could've been better. comical but it seems too repetitive lyrically. its not unlistenable, but i'd never put the album on to hear that.

SHOE - sublime. my be my fave track on the album. some of his best vocals, moody. not a typical R & B ballad. could be played on diverse formats

the 1 U Wanna C - cool, poppy, fun. i like it. P is talking junk (he CAN do that can't he and not be accused of being a shallow, womanizing hypocrite can't he; some ppl don't understand when he's just being a tongue n cheek artist playing the cat and mouse game)

Future Baby Mama - love the track. i understand the dislike because of the title. but got over that quickly. P is not trying to be "GHETTO", he's just having fun (paradoxical fun with it being a well-sung ballad) with a recent term, nothing deep to read into it

Mr. Goodnight - good track, Prince is in "mack mode" again; it seems poorly mixed. its comical but catchy, great background vocals too.

ATMITW (all the midnights) - mediocre - i like that it showcases P's diversity. its almost in a musical category unto itself, i like the vocal arrangement and the chorus at the end and all but it seems incomplete for some reason and not because its so short

Chelsea Rodgers - good track; love the way he so easily funks the album up a bit. he lets Shelby shine here to the chagrin of many. love the story the song is telling about a non-shallow model for a change.

Lion of Judah - good track; poppy again, with some guitar, non-formulaic, kind of confusing lyrically though. i understand the resentment from the God haters again. its mostly because of the title. it's a biblical term and ppl don't want to believe there is a "wrath" associated with God nor do they want to accept that prince is a JW and his beliefs will surface in his music at times. it seems they think that to like songs where that happens is to agree with his beliefs.

Resolution - an ok song, but a TRUE song. its simplicity is mistaken for naiveite (sp?). i like how he seems so "loose" at the beginning of the acoustic riff and says, "come wit it".

Overall, i'd give the album a 7 of out 10. Nothing on it is unlistenable for me. its mature, reflective and shows where he is at 50 and its a curveball to fans, which i can always appreciate, TRUE artists follow their own muse and not what ppl WANT or EXPECT.
[Edited 2/25/09 10:38am]

btw, i think Tricky99 might be my new favorite org'er - lots of balance and truth
[Edited 2/25/09 10:39am]

alright i'm back with my review track by track

PLANET EARTH - WHAT THE HELL IS THIS SHIT? usually with the 1st track of album it's some kick ass track but this immediately sets the tone that this album is going 2 put u 2 sleep. the melody itself is like some fisher price piano that u find in a toy dept. after the great starts of prince's previous 2 albums..wrong placement 4 this song 2 being a album

GUITAR - very catchy tune. the tongue in cheek lyrics are very good. finally woke me up

SOMEWHERE HERE ON EARTH - i really love this song, the lyrics speak 2 me where i can relate.

THE ONE U WANNA C -damn what a regression and it keeps going from this track onward. this is what happens when ur constantly playing ur older material and beliving u can recreate that same magic with different lyrics. i would have liked it better if he put vavoom on this album instead of this track

FUTURE BABY MAMA - again WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!!! from the boring linn drums 2 the title, 2 the stupidity of the lyrics what woman in the world, wait, SANE woman in the world wants 2 date someone who only looks at her as a future baby mama? and dissing ur 2 x wives in a song isn't cool either. sounds like someone doesn't want 2 take fault 4 his own actions

MR. GOODNIGHT - the beat is alright but the lryics and delivery ruin it

ALL THE MIDNIGHTS IN THE WORLD - shall we go 4 the trifecta? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? am i listening 2 prince or fucking barney?

CHELSEA RODGERS - Nile rodgers this isn't. this is a tired attempt at trying 2 have a disco ball come down from the celing ..but the ball got stuck in the rafters

LION OF JUDAH - confuse eek that's all i can say

RESOLUTION - wall make it stop!!! oh wait the album is over ..time 2 put back on 3121 dancing jig now that's FUNKY ..let me put on Chaos and disorder guitar now that's rocking!

planet earth should have been renamed planet shit

Initially when I got it, I didnt like it much, but as time wore on, I warmed to it. Still I don't think its as good as 3121 or Musicology but it is better than TRC or Rave, its an OK album, hardly the type we should expect from him. Some of the crass enviromentalism is a bit sad too. Overall I would give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. Rating some of the tracks

1. Planet Earth 7/10 ok ballad a bit overdone
2. Guitar, too simplistic got tired quickly 4/10
3. All the Midnights in the world, not bad quite ctachy 7/10
4. Resolution, boring MOR 3/10
5. The one u wanna c, this more like it, catchy Pop song 7/10
6. Future Baby Mama, silly themes but ok sound. 5/10
7. Chelsea Rodgers, stand out track, great female vocals, 8/10
8. Mr Goodnight, silly, amateurish rap, silly Urban R and B Keith Sweat feel 3/10
9. Lion of Judah very catchy rock track, soaring voice and tracks, the best song
9/10
10. Somewhere here on earth, ok soul like ballad, nice balletic feel 6/10

Total Marks out of 100, 59 (Thats a very average mark in my book) smile
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time
