USA Today says all 3 albums released in...

late March!

Prince and friends party like it's 2009

By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY
BEVERLY HILLS — To celebrate his cyberspace return and three upcoming albums, Prince threw a house party Saturday night for 30 guests who got a large-screen tour of his elaborate website lotusflow3r.com followed by a rowdy two-hour concert.

The Purple One, who vanished from the Web after shutting down his groundbreaking NPG Music Club in 2006, is ramping up the new membership site in time to deliver MPLSound, Lotusflow3r and Elixir, the debut by protégée Bria Valente. He's planning a simultaneous late-March release. Site designers unveiled a dizzying interactive universe, including a sphere of photos and performance clips.

Guests, including Anita Baker, assembled downstairs for a raucous dance bash, featuring Prince and a rocking soul band serving up mostly heated covers, including The Cars' Let's Go, The Rolling Stones' Miss You, the Jackson 5's I Want You Back, and Sly & the Family Stone's Stand and I Want to Take You Higher. After a long jam inspired a full-house Electric Slide, Prince quipped: "Y'all done tore up my carpet. I'm never inviting y'all back."

If Prince truly is his own gatekeeper on this project (and not some record company fixated on traditional Tuesday releases 4 North America), then I'm sure that he can get them released on any date he wants, including Saturday 3/21, 2009. Besides, I think Guns 'n Roses released "Chinese Democracy" last November on a Sunday, and that was thru a label.

Downloads... I'm not so sure that they'll be released sooner, as he wouldn't want people disseminating them in advance of the physical releases. I'll never forget how tight a ship there was pre-release dates when it came 2 3121, Planet Earth, and even 21 Nights. It wouldn't surprise me if his web team make some more .mp3 leak mistakes while launching the new site(s).

Cool. As MadeUpName stated, Guns & Roses Chinese Democracy was released on the weekend. Best Buy had that exclusive too.

Ok, thanks for the info. I wouldn't mind if he makes it a habit to release his albums on 3/21. It's the day before my birthday, so it's a nice birthday present! smile

I hope the website will be fully activated long before the release of the albums, though...

Didn't one of the fan reviews also say they saw something on the website that made them think they would be out in March too?

That's just 7/8 weeks away, not long at all. smile

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the downloads hit the website on Saturday, 3/21 followed by the CDs in the "big box retailer" on the traditional Tuesday, 3/24. It gives Prince a few days exclusive to sell to his fans while simultaneously driving traffic to his site where they might be induced to become paid members.

Also, if the CDs are going to be sold through Best Buy, I have a feeling the company will observe the standard release day (Tuesday) -- something they didn't do with "Chinese Democracy." The general consensus that I've read is that the handling of that record was one giant cock-up. I don't think they'll tinker with the formula for their next exclusive release.

I don't mind that it's not as the site teaser, or LA Times interview, suggested. I'm just glad that we have some kind of an idea, that's all most people want. Is it really that hard?

The quality won't change, the albums are done. He could theoretically release them for download today. Then we get quality and quickness. cool
