I'm not too fond of the version of "A Case of U" on this cd, especially since his live version from 8/8/83 concert where he debut most of the Purple Rain tracks is simply MAGICAL.

It's got highs and lows for me. I hail the title song as one of my favourite Prince songs ever, with it's freestyle form and intense vocalisation.

But is also has extreme lows, with indeed Pearls Before The Swine, which, as a live instrumental piece does not bother me that much. So it's the lyrics. I mean "Can I offer U baklava or a bagel with cream cheese?" still irks me as one of the most horrid, bland lyrics he ever committed to tape. Young And Beautiful does almost the same to me. Skipperdeeskip.

When it comes to lyrics, Prince was heavy in his Rainbow Children-mode, so some of the lyrics do not make so much sense to me. Where as I could tap into his spiritual side before, with Lovesexy and Purple Rain, that open-mindedness was over with TRC and this album.

I actually like that "baklava" line. Sure, it might be bland but I like it because it's just so straightforward. I like the song anyway, because it addresses a "conflict" between Prince and his fans in an interesting way. It might be whiny, though. But it's one of the rare songs where Prince shows he's acutally touched by criticism.

Some people dislike the use of synths, but that just adds to the mood of the album for me. I've always loved it.
[Edited 1/22/09 0:22am]

I think at times the synths work perfectly, like at the end of UGCM but when the melody from 'Have a heart' picks up again at the end of the next song and he trashes it with this cheap-ass synth flute, I need to puke.

There's a lot of those critisism's in his music. I also like the "I'm a slave cuz you don't pay me enough"-songs and the "Laywers are the devil"-songs. It totally shows he is in touch with, ermmm, sumthing.

When Prince whines, I always have to think about Kevin Smith's experiences with Prince and his elephant (or was it a camel?) remark. Classic.

You're right, he does address it more often. But I think not quite in this way, usually in more angry songs and pretending it does not mean anything. Here he almost seems to be hurt by it.

Never thought of it like that, I always thought it was about record companies. Saying how they're big business full of fakers that pretend to be your friend but only when it suits their purpose.

haha yeah pearls is one of my all time fave prince songs-but yep its aimed at"fams" who slagged off his output and friends after the celebration

so even prince hates on "FAMS"!!!

Interesting, I always thought of a FAM as someone who loves everything he does and thinks he can do no wrong. Therefore, if he's hating at any of his fanbase, it's the ones who moan about the recent stuff and want him to do Dirty Mind, (or whatever), pt II.

I can't see how it hates on fams at all, only on fams. Still reads to me like an industry attack though, regardless of the true meaning.

Oh and for what it's worth, I love that track. biggrin

This CD is alright. Not my favorite but nothing to leave up on the shelf to collect dust either. It is a beautifully done CD. Who's going to complain about Prince being alone with a piano? The songs I dig are Have a Heart (my favorite off of ONA), Young and Beautiful, Objects in the Mirror and Pearls B4 the Swine. Avalanche is tight too.

Oh and the whole "Pearls..." song, when I found out what the song was about, I laughed my ass off. I thought, Prince isn't that crazy after all. lol lol lol
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I don't understand him adding "Pearls" on the disk.. it is obvious it was thrown on there for filler.. I would have much rather enjoyed a real piano version of the song (or another song) that would have flowed better than pearls.. just sticks out terribly

YOU HIGH?? eek pearls b4 the swine is one of the beatiful songs that man has ever put down on wax

I don't care if it is his best song of all time.. put it where it fits.. It does not fit this album. he went from real to plastic on that track. doesn't make sense.

This album feels too forced to me. I do love the title track to death but much of the rest feels like nothing but repetition. Not one of my go-tos.

I've been pulling this album out quite a bit...

I admire this piece of work. I think the title track is one of the best songs he's written out of the 00's era. I value the experimentation of it, not to mention his piano style.

Overall, it isn't as solid as his older albums, but I catch drifts of improv throughout some of the songs, and that's usually where he drifts into interesting territory, lyrically and with his chord progressions. I also am thankful that he was sitting on a real piano. There are some prince tracks that simply bother me to no end because it sounds like he is sitting on a cheap keyboard, but not this time.

The only track that sticks out of the bunch is "Pearls Before the Swine". I don't dislike the song, it's just that the song doesn't simply fit with the flow of the album. The only song with a keyboard, it just felt thrown in.

anyone dig this album?

Putting "here on earth" on paper and actual trying to describe it.. it sounds like it would have been a disaster, but it really turned out beautiful... The piano notes flow as if they are following him.. beautfiul

wait, what?

imagine this:

01. one nite alone
02. u're gonna c me
03. here on earth
04. a case of u
05. have a heart
06. i love u, but i don't trust u anymore
