In your post musician = istrumentalist. Sure, there are many better instrumentalists than Prince. But Prince's greatness is not his ability to play the piano or the guitar, but his ability to compose and perform great popular music.

A lot of profis feel this way about Prince, you'd be surprised. A he's grown older he's given some of these folks more to chew on, but his older stuff post 1999 amounts to not much more than gimmickry for a lot of professional musicians.

I look @ prince as an amazing musician. Personally I think he did a damn good job mastering his intruments. He may not b as good on a particular instrument as he would b if tht was the only thng he concentrated on. But 2 me he is better on his each individual instrument thn most artists who only play 1 are. I thnk he iz among the best on most evrythng he plyz. But the fact tht he plyz thm all iz wat mkes hm reign supreme

I'm the first to concede that Prince is not the greatest guitarist... or the greatest pianist... or the greatest bassist... or the greatest drummer... or the greatest singer... or the greatest composer/arranger... or the greatest dancer... or the greatest bandleader... or the greatest producer... (I could go on, but you get the idea!)

But the fact remains that he is above average in all of those qualities. That is an amazing feat. He took what people like Stevie Wonder were doing to the next level.

Prince has recieved major props from some of the most respected musicians ever to walk the earth - people from the rock world, the soul/rnb world, the jazz world etc, etc. So unless you're the human reincarnation of music herself, how can you say he's simply an average musician?

After talking with a amazing musician about prince and showing him some of prince best music we came the the paint to say that:
Prince is just another avarage musician! Not bad, and not great! There are thousands of people better than him! he is an good guitarplayer, a good paino player, ...and so on! But never great nor the greatest!( some people here maybe never heard some people like gary moore playing goutar,,,....wow..)
Maybe thats the problem with weak respond of the music buying public! he is not enough to be a rocker, not enough to be an rnb, he is everything but...is that what the people want..

At the end he has written some really great pop songs, thats what people will remember, not his guitar playing.
He will be remembered as one of the greatest pop stars (but not as musician...)
He is like MJ an entertainer( higher that Mj because he can play some instruments..)

i will still listen to him, but my ears will be also open for other great music!

Strangely enough, I was talking about prince to a great musician a few weeks ago. His word tyo qualify Prince as a musician was genius and overgifted.
Funny if you think that Miles davis, Clinton, Eric Clapton and Lately again Elton John and Brian May have all qualified Prince a brillant and overgifted musician.
Brian May qualified Prince as a pure musical genius after seeing him at the O2 last year.

Elton John said after attending a concert at the O2 that Prince was the best muscian out there at the moment and that he was in his own league.
So please tell your so called great musician from many of us here that Prince would kick his ass anytime.

I disagree : as a multi instrumentalist he is one of the very best out there along with Stevie Wonder and Marcus Miller. These guys cqn be on their own in a studio and do things musically no one else can.

Prince is among the best ever musicians....

Remember some years ago (around 2002 or so)when they had a poll of the 100 Greatest musicians of all Time on VH1?

Prince was ranked 18 (below some of the 1960's and 1970's acts). He was voted on by writers and fellow musicians in that poll. This was before his induction into the RRHOF

I remember in the montage of his clips, Eric Clapton, Rpbert Plant,Little Richard, and some other rock legends praising P. His peers realize his genius and that is proof enough of what his legacy will be. The guy is a rare talent (especially when younger) that combined elements of EVERYTHING into his music to create classic albums.

What we have to avoid is using his weaker output over the past few years as grounds to diminish how great he was (and still is to some extent)

one of my favourite ever threads in here was as follows:

I often wonder, especially in the early days before computers and sequencers were a heavy part of the recording process, how Prince did those long extended jams on his albums.

What I mean is - many of his songs would be a few verses, a few choruses, and then would launch into long jams... such as DMSR, 1999, Just Another Sucker, Just As Long As We're Together, Let's Work, etc.

To write a structured song with verses and bridges, etc, is relatively simple. It's all mapped out basically. Like the Kenny Rogers song "The Gambler" for an extremely simple example.

But I wonder, how did Prince "map out" those jams if he was doing it all on his own. Could he "hear" all the parts in his head before starting? Or did he literally say "I am going to make this song 8 minutes and 25 seconds."?

This sounds like a simple question, but when you are actually recording in that fashion, it is really a mystery. The reason being is that if you are recording the drum part first, for example, and at 8:14 you decide to do a fill or a stop, then you will have to remember to change with the drums at 8:14 when you are doing the bass, synth, vocals, etc...

I am probably phrasing this question to sound complicated, but I'm trying...

For another example... The song "I'm Yours" has kind of a massive build up, or crescendo, throughout the song to the ending. Somehow Prince had to known in his mind to make all the parts interlock to create this crescendo properly.

It would be one thing to record a song like this with a full band and give the other bands members cues and whatnot, but playing all the instruments yourself? Without the aide of ProTools (in 1980)? And at a studio that probably charged $50+ per hour?

That's feckin' amazing.

I really like this post and agree with it.

I was watching School of Rock the other night and it made me think of Prince and how he puts a song together.

I suppose there is a formula (though I’m not a musician so I don’t know what it is) but I am still in awe of it.

Whether you think Prince is the greatest or not his work/music is very textured and layered and there is just so much going on even in the simplest of tracks
Shut up already, damn.

Prince isnt not only a musician, but and that makes the difference to a n y other musician on earth Prince i s music!!!!

there may be others , who can play an instrument technically better , but thats not the point, P is by far the best live performer on earth, hes composer ,producer songwriter and he gives the best (after)shows on earth!

and that for a period of more than 25 years , so I think the name of Gary Moore is better not named with P in one sentence!(although he is for sure a good musician, but miles away..) cool cool cool

JayJai said:[quote]I believe that mainly because Prince can play over 22 instruments is the reason why he's considered a great musician in the first place. There might b better guitar players than him, better piano players than him, better drummers than him, but being able to play alllll those instruments makes him a great musician. Also being able to play all different types of guitars in addition to different styles on the guitar can be taken into consideration. Of course there are other great musicians, some unheard of, but callin Prince an 'average' musician...nah...don't think so.
Reality Check: He also carries the entire package, looks, style, stage performance, his is swagger is on point and because of that, ppl are drawn to him, searchin for his skills within his musicianship...if he was the 'average-lookin Joe" (don't knock me cause y'all kno wat I mean), he may not have been admired by so many (even people that aren't interested in music, now are). Now if Gary Moore had the entire package on lock, his popularity would've soared even more than it has (even though I don't kno who he is).

So can u name those 22 instruments?? Thats a joke! maybe 6 or so( bass guitar, drums keys, cymbals(HA,HA ), but the rest is bull shit! does that mean that when u can play a synthetiser u can play 100 instruments

One thing i just have to say is that the person who i was talking to is multi instrumentalist! He is now 38 and is playing piano since he is 5 years! He also plays guitar( at the moment bass in his band ) , drums...and that very good!
maybe the problem is that he studies the music in his head, he feels it and hears what other dont hear! i mean, when musicology came out i showed him call my name!after a moment he took his guitar and played some great solos and parts that sounded great without not knowing the song! i mean, that is a talent..

its not that the person doesnt like prince, but he says that prince work is more quantity than qaulity!

i agree. and wen u thnk about it... who is the single greatest at wat they do. i dont thnk u can say 1 person is the greatest guitarist in the world or the greatist bassist in the world. the world has enuff room for tons of the "greatest" musicians. an lyk toejam sed... he is above avergage n all of his categories. hes better on 1 of his instruments thn most artists are tht only focus on tht instrument

You want to find out just how great a musician Prince really is? Do this:

Go to a Prince concert.
Get right next to the stage.
Get Prince's attention.
Offer him a sand dollar.
Let nature take its course.

Prince is an average musician eek eek eek ???
Prince and the word average doesn't even belong in the same sentence!
Do you know a person as multi-talented and creative as Prince? Do you know a person who taught himself how to play all these instruments and is in addition to that a brilliant songwriter and performer?
Do you really believe that Warner would have signed Prince at such a tender age when nobody even knew who Prince was, if it wasn't for his incredible talent? Not only was he signed by Warner but given more freedom than any established musician at the time.
Prince is not average, Prince's talent is absolutely amazing and out of this world!

Man...improvising over a tune is basic stuff for musicians. I'm an average muscian and my teachers have always shown me how to use scales to improvise solos and riffs over tunes ! lol
