I was hooked the second I first caught the riff from Controversy, dam near stopped me in my tracks.
Nothing, and I mean nothing on radio sounded anything like it, …and my family and friends as a kid had very diverse tastes in music at the time so I was listening to everything. Funk, Rock, New Wave, Punk, Pop and here was something totally different and awesome! I was hooked from Controversy on.
I think he became more sophisticated by leaps and bounds from each album forward.
Every year I knew which was the new Prince song on the radio by how far it blew everything else away.
That is up until SOTT, to me that is the peak, lovesexy on was a slide down back to the mundane, where he tried to ape the up and coming youngsters. The sound bored and alienated me so, I drifted from him in the 90’s
One day I was listening to the radio and I caught the riff from a new band called Nirvana, i hadnt heard anything so uninhibited and free spirited in such a long time and I was hooked from that day forward. And if you love music you will always find somebody to fall in love with when a musical relationship sours.
Since that time I have fallen in love with Radiohead, Philip Glass, Sade, Portishead, James Brown, Queens Of The Stone Age, The White Stripes, Oasis, tons and ton more, I’m such slut

That doesn’t mean i don’t still have feeling fro Mr. Prince, just not in that way.

i understood ur topic right away...and i realize that is ME. Purple rain to me is the Movie. the album never really got me. of course there are brilliant moments post 1999, but it's those earlier works are the ones that resonate with me.

i feel kind of bad because i am a Prince Ambassador and now question if i am worthy of that duty.
