Probably created by the media. I happen to love that nickname. It fits him to the tee!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The real question... and i did ask this once and nobody was able to answer it... is - Who was the first person to refer to prince as 'his royal badness'.

Because his name was Prince (royalty) and he was bad. It's not hard to figure out.

The hell if I know. I remember the DJs on R&B radio calling him that around either the "Dirty Mind" or "Controversy" era. I bet either "Right On", "Black Beat", or "Rock and Soul" magazines was the first. They were the main magazines that featured him back then.

Donnie Simpson who hosted Video Soul on BET in the 1980s was the first person I heard dub Prince as "His Royal Badness." BET has ALWAYS shown Prince love!

I wouldnt doubt what you say here is true. However, it still does not pin point us to the individual who coined the phrase. I wonder if it was self proclaimed and released into the social concience via WB to said publications? I was unaware that the term was being thrown around as early as DM. I always assumed it was a 1999/PR thing. The search goes on!

Because I don't like the name.

Prince always has been a man of God.

I don't think the name fits him.

Ok, he screwed a few ( smile ) women, but that doesn't make him a bad man.

Ok - I'm not sure whether you're joking or not confused If you're not, the term 'bad' is meant in a good way

syble

I always thought his royal badness in the uk referred to his lewd behaviour on stage etc he was bad in the true sense of the word. i didnt think people used bad as in good pre 1980's. I also thought that term was adopted in the UK press in the early 80s, it was certainly used in the article I posted from The Face magazine in 1984.
