the gatekeeper

Has listening to Prince opened the door into other genres of music for you?

For me Prince opened me up to R&B and reopened 80's pop (cyndie lauper, and d'angelo can thank Prince for my recent purchases)

What great music have you been inspired to seek out after listening to Prince?

(other than more prince ofcourse)

Can't say he's opened musical doors for me because I've always had diverse musical tastes. Of course, maybe Prince is the reason I have diverse tastes.

On a similar note, Prince is the one who got me into Joni Mitchell and Cocteau Twins. I bought my first Joni and Cocteau Twins albums simply because I read that Prince was a fan, so it piqued my interest. I've been hooked on both of those artists ever since.

Joni Mitchell? Nice one.
I'm not familiar with the Cocteau Twins.. I'll have to check them out now though. (I'm actually writing down on my little note book of stuff to check out)

Prince's music has helped me to explore and appreciate the rap stylings of the incomparable Tony M. nod

Actually, 'The Gatekeeper' sounds like a great name for a Prince album.

Funny you said that. When I saw the title of the thread, I thought it was the title of one of those boots floatin' around.

Oh yes. Prince is kind of the centre of my musical world. I've gone sort of backwards and forwards from him. He has directly led me to:-

Miles Davis

Joni Mitchell

Parliament/funkadelic

Stevie Wonder

Sly And The Family Stone

Graham Central Station

Carlos Santana

And those artists have in turn led me to many others.

So yes a 'Gatekeeper' for sure
if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Moonbeam Levels is perfect for the song AND a 50's scifi paperback.

Except for related artists, Prince hasn't really caused me to seek out any other artists, in particular.

We're contemporaries, so many of the artists that have influenced him are the same ones I listened to growing up. shrug
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
