THIS is the Prince that I saw for the first time in concert at Santa Monica Civic, Feb 12, 1982 on the Controversy tour. The Time and Zapp w/Roger Troutman were the opening acts. The show was killin'. Simply killin'. Prince and his band was raw, hella rocked out and super tight. But at the same time, they were very polished.They had so much edge too. Prince at this time played like his life depended on it. He was a TOTALLY different cat back then. And the times were totally different as well. Prince was on his way bigtime. Everybody could see it. Prince was a bonafide superstar even during this tour.But he was still underground. He had a very cult-ish following. That place was PACKED! This band lineup with Bobby, Fink, Lisa, Mark and Dez is definately my favorite lineup of Prince's.

I can't even imagine how amazing it must have been to see him back then. Even the clips I've got of 1st Avenue '83 seem so raw, real Prince, it must have been mind blowing to have seen him at the beginning!!

I had a chance to go see Prince when he opened up for Rick James with my older cousin but I got really sick and couldn't go. That was from his second album. And he was hella wild then. So by the time he got to Controversy, he was at least wearing pants Thank God. But other than that, P just had so much edge. He was looked crazy as hell in his eyes. Then and the 1999 period. That went away by the time he got to Purple Rain. Prince had softened up quite a bit by the time Purple Rain hit. That was like the "clean" version of Prince. Folks talk about how way out Prince was during PR but he wasn't at all compared to how he was before that. Prince was crazy looking and crazy acting but he had this "cool" aura about him at the same time. Prince seemed so much "older" then too. He acted older when he was younger. Very street wise and he showcased that during the Controversy tour. He dropped so much by the time he got to Purple Rain. Cuz he was trying to be more accessible to the mainstream crowd.

^ Black, you ever seen/heard an account of what the Rick James opening was like? PDogz gave one once, and he said so much crazy shit, I wasn't sure if I should believe him.

Well I've mentioned this on here in the past several times. My cousin and I were slated to go see Rick and I was looking hella foward to seeing Prince being that I dug him as well. But I got really sick the week before and missed all week of school. So there was no way my mother was letting me go to this concert. So I gave my ticket to my cousin's girlfriend and they went. He said that Prince and the band was rock to the 12th defgree. And that Prince was damn near butt ass naked. Other brutha's actually got up and walked out during Prince's set.They couldn't fuck with Prince's image.
