If Prince asked all his fans to quit being his fans out of respect for his privacy/religion/etc....

...what would you do?

If he said he was bowing out of the music biz and didn't want to be treated like a public figure or a music idol anymore, and asked for his fans to comply with his wishes, how would you react?

How do you think other people would react?

Has anyone ever made a request like this before? I know some folks have gone reclusive or under the radar for long periods of time (Sly, J.D. Salinger as extreme examples; Sade, Kate Bush, Patti Smith as less extreme (and hopefully temporary) examples), but has anyone ever said "I take it all back, I'm one of you now, leave me be"?

Just some questions to gnaw at. shrug

i know that, but that's not what i'm talking about. i'm talking in terms of principles, not in terms of practicalities.

Well,I'd definetly be sad,but for me...i'd have to respect that, because i would want to be treated the same if i were in the same shoes. although,i would still always marvel to myself of his work. i think that it would be a hard thing for people to forget such a talented artist. shrug

u mentioned patti smith..I dig that lady. her 'when doves cry' cover is great,by-the-way!

Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots.

I'd say it was another sad publicity stunt gone wrong

Unfortunately he will never stop his old vagina music from being free to the masses.

I would turn around and say "what it is.....your one mad motherfucker, remember your the sexy motherfucker with the wonderful ass"

I think he's already done that in a way, some of the things he said at the aftershows in London for instance, he kept TELLING us that he was 'just like us', when I made eye contact with him at one of the aftershows, I was probably looking at him like he was some kind of God, and he kept staring at me until I got a grip and realised he was just a man! He was definintely making a point. I think he still wants us to appreciate his music but not 'worship' him or 'idolise' him in any way. I can't see him ever bowing out of the music industry altogether, but he seems to have toned it down.... I wonder if 21 nights really WAS the last time he'll play all the 'hits'? I hope not though... Oh, and comply with his wishes? Well, we could TRY confused

I think that if Prince wanted out...he'd just do it! There wouldn't be a single thing we could do about it either. I'd be sad, and would have to deal with it, but he couldn't stop me from enjoying the past!! wink

As you sow so shall you reap.

However fans react depend on how the artist acts. How the artist reacts depends on how fans act.

Not even Prince can escape hi|s|tory...

If he wanted to do it I'd respect his wishes, so long as he started acting like a regular non-celebrity...

That means no turning up for VIP events, no courtside basketball seats while schmoozing with other celebrities, no prancing around in heels, bright yellow suits and designer shades at all times of day. No Oscar parties, no releasing new music under pseudonyms etc.

If he wants to do concerts and not be idolised, get rid of the expensive merchandise. If you don't want to be idolised in any way but just have people appreciate your music, why condone people wearing the symbols on badges and necklaces or your face on T-Shirts?
