In 1982, u didn't have hardly any mainstream artists, regardless of genre, cursing on their albums. It just didn't happen. Major labels weren't going for it and artists didn't really want to do it. It wasn't the thing to do. P was all about trying to shock people. Most of what dictated what P did from 79 was all about shock. I was somewhat blown away by the amount of cursing he did on the Dirty Mind album. I thought the cat was kinda crazy. I dug him though. I was a kid and it was very different to like Prince in 1980. His cursing was much more sincere and angry on the Dirty Mind album. It was more authentic. Not really on the 1999 album. That was more for shock value. I had already been hip to that on DM so by the time I heard it in Let's Pretend, the shock had already worn off. I dug his cursing when it was hidden on other parts of the 1999 album. I've ran threads about this on here in the past. I don't want to get into it again here but people were blown away by P's upfront type of "Yeah bitch, I'll fuck u untill the blood runs down into the lake and I'll get shocked by your electric orgasm." U know, stupid shit like that. Girls ate that up in the early 80's.

yeah, I can relate to that, by the time P hit ireland and the UK, no mainstream artist used curse words, although, "something i was not aware of at the time" the likes of the sex pistols and some irish folk groups were so well known for it, that no one ever really cared. But Prince unlike them, mostly used his curse words with reference to sex, and this was a shocker, in particular how he worded it, this sort of explicit implicit style. 1999 is full of it, but you only will notice how extreme it is, when you are in a situation where you least expect it, can be quite embarrassing sometimes. Especially when your mother likes the melody from international lover and wants a copy of the song, and you simply cringe and think, this can come to no good, christ but he was class back then, just raw, implicit explicit and struck the jugular

This was the first Prince song I listened to over and over. I would ditch first period just to listen to this song and DMSR.

Say what you will about Prince and his early days of distaste and sexuality... it remains my single most favorite lyric in all of his songs. If not for the sheer shock value and vulgarity - it gave me a new goal.
