Prince singing along to samples on recent tour...what happened to 'real music by real musicians' ?

Does anyone else think it was lazy and hypocritical of him to use backing tracks for his so called ''sampler'' set...it sounded like karaoke to me ! neutral

Honestly, I think Prince doesn't see past his current project.

he'll make statements that support what he's currently doing, then a few months later, when he's on his next album or project, it's as if he started over again.

Contradicting himself? yes. But I assume he's doing it more from being a spazz than from lying outright. lol

If you want to see Prince lie his ass off, just find the Oprah Interview with him and Mayte. CRINGE WORTHY.

You all mental. Don't you think when he was refering to "'real music by real musicians " in that his band actually played the guitars, horns and keyboards live on the stage. Do you guys expect him to bring violens for Purple Rain.

Some artist sing to prerecorded vocals and music all the time for each and every performance.

Hugh difference from whatever samples P may have used.

Mike- P is not Jesus he does not have a pack with you to honest and respectful with you. Get over yourself.

Does anyone still think that P should have gone on Oprah and discussed his dead child? I am glad he did not say anything about at all. It would have appeared that he was using the tradgey to promote his CD. It really would have been tasteless.

Prince lies and doesn't respect his fans. Prince should be like Tori Amos. The woman always goes before the shows and she greets and chats with her fans. As Prince ever done that?

prince was using backing tracks on the musicology tour. listen to "7" and "when doves cry". i understand his wanting to use samples to preserve the integrity of the original recording, but can't he just change the arrangement to create a live-friendly version that would be just as powerful? shrug

Yes, I am mental, but I fail to see what that has to do with anything.

erm. I never said I wanted P to do anything.

Someone said Prince lied in regards to this type of stuff. I was stating that I don't think he's leing so much as just shifting gears with each project as if he's reinveted the slate. "Real Musicians, etc" was a Musicology mantra. By the time 3121 came around it was a new project--that's all.

As far as Oprah I never said I wanted him not to lie. Just that he did lie, and if folks want to see an example of him lying, tune into that--not this "real music" stuff, which can't be considered lying without some imagination or presuming.

The lovesexy tour was the last great prince tour. I think the sampling "horror" started with The Ultimate Live Experience Tour...A disgrace.

Still the One Nite Alone tour was return to the good ol' days. Shame the ONA...LIVE! boxset was so heavy edited and overdubbed. Just listen to the ONA...Live promo ep that NPG records sent to the radio stations. Xenophobia was butchered. Renato had a kick-ass solo...

Are you kidding me? Were you not around during the ONA soundchecks? Or the Celebration? Or the after-parties during the Tamar tour?

You guys are freaking nuts. Prince is the best live performer of this or just about any generation. You're picking one or two songs that for production reasons had samples played, and making it seem like Prince is Milli Vanilli. Calling him a liar and a fake?

No WONDER he's shy around fans. I would be too, if there was a chance I'd meet YOU.

Aren't we talking about the opening solo?

Some claim the opening riff from WDC is really a backwards-played snippet of the solo. If so, it would be tricky if not impossible to re-create that live.

Personally, I think Prince could play any solo ever, frontwards backwards sideways or inside out.

Yep and I think people are a bit bored so over analyze stuff a bit too much, what happened to live for the moment. Who cares about the lil bits hes done wrong when hes so great thats why these fan sites exist as we all recognize his talent. I doubt Tori Amos has fans that are so obsessed, it must be weird to meet someone who is obsessed with you and knows all about your life(or think they do) when you don't even know their name.

Did u realise that the sounds that all electronic instruments make are sample-based?
The sounds you get from a synth and a digital piano are samples of a piano or other instrument played by someone else in the past.
Stretch the samples a bit and you can have loops.
But Prince plays the samples and every time he played them in that section of the O2 shows, he played 'em differently.

The point at which Prince came in with the 'real' music vibe was that point in the 90's when the order of the day for much live music was a 'live' PA where an act would sing along on top of a DAT tape.

I think the 'real music' vibing is a little old at this point as it's very rare these days to find any band or singer, even synth-based dance acts who aren't playing everything live.

More recently, I think prince and others have been kicking against the promoters of the world representing DJs' sets as some kind of 'live'.

I get the feeling that America may be different in this respect and that Prince will have been pleasantly surprised at thepredominantly 'live' action amongst all kinds of artists in the UK where you'd have to be at a karaoke night to get any kind of backing track these days.

Whoever said the sampler set was LIKE karaoke obviously hasn't been to a karaoke night. Actually come to think of it, neither have I

wink

It reminds me of a time when Prince thought He and Mayte were each other in another life. A bit after that...I found the Playboy with Vanity in it...and in the interview, Vanity said that Prince said he thought they were each other in a past life...COINCIDENCE...I think NOT!

edit: 2 seconds after I typed Playboy with vanity in it...I typed Appolonia said that....how interchangeable they are
