I  My Prince Playlists

I love technology. Back in the 80's, when I started collecting Prince music, I could never have thought technology would advance in such a way to allow me to compile playlists on my computer, in this way also advancing my listening pleasure.

I am currently listening to a personalised version of 2 nigs United 4 West-Compton; I edited off the vocal intro, making the song start with that weird sound just before the voices scant the title of the song.
I understand that this really pisses Prince off, so that kinda makes it even more precious. I am naughty that way. cool

I edit alot of his stuff, just because he decided to ignore his back catalogue. I have edited CD albums like Parade, because I hate, hate, hate it when a song like Anotherloverholenyohead starts with a nano second of Kiss, or you can still hear Susannah LALALA on the first second of Housequake. So, I have gone through lengths to go through the Prince back catalogue and edit these fuck-ups out of it.

Then I started making playlists. First a playlist with ALL his ballads. Then a whipped down version of that cuz I do not like every ballad.

And that was just the start of many a playlist. And I love, love, love playing them, as it makes me enjoy my Prince Experience even more. And I love how my computer enables me to personalise it; to be able to ad a rip of the instrumental An Honest Man from the Under The Cherry Moon to my Parade playlist.

Currently I am playing my Prince Instrumentals playlist, including his instrumental work from albums, but also the Madhouse works, his instrumentals for/with Sheila E and others. It is an amazing overview of the many different styles he has used to convey emotions, be they for the soul or for the hips.

Well, once the CD-R's were done I kinda lost interest. The whole fun was in making them. I don't really listen to Prince much these days. I mostly listen to the radio. biggrin

Uhmmm
I hate radio.

And these playlists just make me revel in Prince's genius; the many 80's jams, the mostly okay 90's period and the sporadic genius tunes of this century...

hmmm Maybe I should do a collection of his best songs from this century. They oughta fit on one CD-R. lol

Thanks! This is all for home entertainment only, though. I am actually mixing a few songs together for a cd, but I would never be able to that live.

It is just a personal project; you know how Prince likes to mix songs in and out of eachother? I am mixing up a few songs together, of which I think they sound good together... just a fun thing, nothing like that one Prince fan that compiled The Dawn, this sublime three cd project containing all mid-90's stuff mashed together into an orgasm of purple sound.

Yeah, I've gotta start making playlists of my own.

I've had a mix in the works for quite some time now.
But I want to listen to SOTT first before I start picking which tracks to put on it. Let's just say I've got enough material for 2 discs.

I've made a playlist of Purple Rain tracks, extended versions mostly. But I'm thinking of burning 'em onto a disc and include a few B-sides and outtakes like Electric Intercouse, 17 days, Possessed (vocal), God (instrumental) and Moonbeam Levels.
Haha... it's better than searching for Apollonia 6 and "Modernaire" to make my own version of the soundtrack with all of the tracks used in the movie. [The Time, I've already found, just haven't bought it yet]

haha... got 4 folders or so of things people have given me that I can make into all kinds of playlists.

Then there's what I can do with what I have on disc. I've experimented with mixing/matching Musicology and 3121 and got some interesting results. But I'm not gonna sneak PE into that because it's perfect on its own (a-thank you).

And maybe if there're some unlistenable tracks on Emancipation, I could take 'em and burn on onto just 2 discs. But I haven't gotten a hold of it and I'm kinda hoping it won't come to that.

For the record, I do not own an iPOD and I don't want to own an iPOD. As long as my CD player works, that's all I'll ever need cool

Most of its hypothetical, of course.

I most likely will do a PR mix with what I have.

And that one mix I mentioned, it's gonna be mostly ballads, love songs and some of my all-time favorites (like Alexa de Paris, Little Red Corvette and Gold). But I want to be sure that I get the best ones on the first disc. With SOTT, I might go over and there's also Emancipation. Could be a bunch of songs there I want to add, but time waits for no one. If I dont get it for xmas, SOTT is the last group of material I'll be able to use on disc I.

I just burned my own mix for "Purple Rain".

Here are the songs I used.
And yes, I am aware that one of them was not meant for the movie at all (a 1999 outtake), but given the scene in the basement, it does make some poetic sense.

Let's Go Crazy (extended)
Take Me with U
Electric Intercourse
The Beautiful Ones (extended)
Father's Song
Computer Blue (extended)
Darling Nikki (extended)
G-Spot
When Doves Cry
17 Days
Moonbeam Levels
I Would Die 4 U
Baby I'm a Star
Purple Rain

I just listened through... and other than a few glitches here and there, it was a blast. I think I've gone over my Prince quota for the day giggle

Let me know what you think of that.

Awright...

A) I would never put a 1999 track on a Purple Rain compilation. I would rather go for The Dance Electric and/or Possessed or even All Day All Night than Moonbeam Levels.
B) I wonder what version of Father's Song you put on there, matey.
C) Intercourse was ousted becuz of The Beautiful Ones, but I would never put three ballad-like songs back-to-back for it takes out the flow of an album. With Dance Electric and Possessed on there, you can space out the ballads trhoughout your collection.
D) For the rest; niiiice compilation.

Well, I had to take out one track at the end. Either Possessed or Moonbeam levels... and I chose to keep the latter just because it just works in my own mind. That's just me shrug

The "Father's Song" verison I have actually sounds like it was recorded when they were filming that scene in the movie. Can hear Prince walking down to the basement and turn the light switch. Probably "bad quality"... but it works for me. Its length is 1:12.

I didnt know I put 3 ballads back 2 back... Electric Intercourse and The Beautiful Ones were the only two... although Father's song could be a ballad... but seeing its length, I didnt think it mattered much.

I listened through and I'm very pleased with the way it came out.

Appreciate the criticsms, though. cool

Welcome. As of yet, my Purple Rain playlist consists of the album as I compiled it myself (see below), but cuzza you I have been adding outtakes now.

A) I have found that if you speed up the demo of G-Spot just a little, it becomes better to listen to somehow. It always sounds like it's played too slow.

B) Silly thing. I just wanted to say Father's Song sounds like a great song to end a LP side with, like Venus De Milo, so I thought, let's look it up where it was placed on early Purple Rain configuration; it was the last song on side two originally. It's motiv also is repeated in Computer Blue, so I would not put it on the same side as Computer Blue.

thanx, glad you liked it.

Actually... I don't think Darling Nikki was what you call "extended"... it's the same length, but there's no backwards tape portion. So he just extended the guitar solo after he screams "your darling little Prince wants to grind"...

It's a real trip, I tell ya. Sure, I have no life... but that was a fun little experiment I did yesterday.
