I agree he's very underrated. Maybe if he didn't bury his playing in every mix he does, release boring ballads as singles most of the time, save his best playing mainly for aftershows and jump all over You Tube, more people would know how great he is.

as posted on the RS site:)

big ups to Prince!!!!
I was more pissed off than anyone else when I didn't see him on the original list. So f'in stupid!!!
People get so side tracked by the flamboyant pop star that he is. They don't see what a brilliant guitarist/musician he is. Go see him in concert. He's on fire. And he's playing a hell of a lot of guitar. And it's real loud too!!!
some others:

Marc Ribot
Bill Frisell
Nels Cline

You have to check these 3 out. The are among the best on the
planet!!!!!

oh yeah, i know john frusciante made the original list, but not for the 6 solo albums that he put out in 6 months. A brilliant guitarist/musician he is!!!

I agree too smile Al Di Meola, Joe Satriani, John McLaughlin, Django Rheinhardt, Larry Carlton, PAT METHENY, Charlie Christian, Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Julian Bream, Chet Atkins, Dave Wilcox, oh the list is endless. Yes Prince is very very good but solely as a guitarist he has a lot of peers. And I know he would agree in an instant wink

Now as a musician...

the only person on that list who is better than prince is chet atkins

Basically, Rolling Stone can make-up any kind of list they want and say just about anything they want in their own magazine. That they missed including Prince in their "Top 100" list (which I really can't get my head around that) just tells me that apparently Prince hasn't kissed any Rolling Stone Ass lately, lol.

It's sad, but I think there are scores of people that are just flat jealous of Prince and his talent. Makes me love him even more!

fuck that old boy network rag, they need to writing an article explaining in detail ( by all panel members) how 100 guitarist are better than prince. That's like boxing when a top fighter who holds a belt isnt even ranked in the top ten in a different licensing organization because he dont have the right connections. It may be offensive to the guitar geeks on this site but hey, if you honestly believe [u]objectively that there are 100 better guitarist please feel free to break it down.

Oh please, most of his playing is a straight rip from Santana's style. Those who equate him with "Hendrix at his best" are deaf/nuts/ignorant. Prince is an assimilator, not an innovator.

No. But I really don't want too. I've seen several clips (live, maybe he's better in the studio) of him and it's just so bad, I can't believe anyone ever let him take a solo. And Cobain is just shit. Seriously, the fucker was a terrible guitarist in every way. Totally overrated because of his death.....

when you see several clips that does not mean you listened to the music. wink

Did it say he was the most innovative guitarist then? I must have missed that...

Yes. He copies other people's styles... but it's the fact that he copies other PEOPLE'S (the plural is the key!) styles. He can do a lot with a guitar... Hendrix, Clapton, Beck etc were blues rock. Cobain... grunge, Slash... rock etc... Put Prince's playing in one category I dare you. Anyone who attended a 3121 aftershow this summer will have seen, rock, funk, jazz and much more. Plus the fact he dances and sings at the same time all adds to his guitarist status. I totally agree he may not be the "best" guitarist (in terms of technique - but feel and soul are more important, aren't they? Or at a particular style of music) but he's got a lot of everything, making him one of the best.

I think it's a cliché to say that sounds like Santana rather than Hendrix. There is Santana in his playing and he can play a straight rip but mostly it isn't (anymore).

Don't know about who is better than who but I think he deserves some recognition for his guitar playing even though it was a little late in coming.

As far as overall talent in the scope of being able to play the dozens of instruments he plays more than competently, I'd say he stands in a class all by himself!

When people think of good guitarists are they not most likely to think of 'rock' music?

I think perhaps 'rock fans' (that is a generalisation I know sorry) don't see Prince as a 'rock star'. He isn't part of their genre, image etc. One example of this would be that recently a UK radio station called Kerrang, which is predominantly a rock station and is branded alongside a rock magazine, played a Prince tune and received complaints from listeners that Prince should not be played on the station. (I didn't hear this personally but my partner told me about it)

Prince is IMO a non conformist. He can play so many kinds of music and doesnt fit in anywhere specifically. He is unique.
