I don't this magazine days after it came out and I thought this package on Prince was amazing. Not only did it have a Q&A with Prince, but it had TWO photo packages (one on Prince's look, the other on Prince's women), a timeline along eight of the twelve pages, numerous top five lists, an album breakdown and a personal essay.

I know that I too often throw in my "As A Journalist...." schtick when I'm posting sometimes, but just for this one last time I have to say it:

As a journalist I am envious of the time and dedication that the Editor-in-Chief (who did the interview) and his staff put into putting this together. I put together a two packages when I was working my weekly college paper (both on the 2006 California state election) and that shit ain't easy. When I was reading this one, I was turning the last page and I was like DAMN--is that it? I want more!!!!! And I went back to the beginning to skim it again.

I've read good interviews with Prince in the past (I really liked the 2004 Rolling Stone Interview), but never has such passion and admiration been conveyed on magazine pages like it was here.

I plan on writing a fan letter to the Editor-in-Chief when I get the first chance.

But Prince's gifts don't come from God. His gift comes from his father, who was musically inclined. We are what we are based upon our parents. We're not children of God, we inherit traits of our parents. Now that is the truth. Only weak minded people follow a religion.

There is no proof that there is no God/god
and there are plenty of good theological
and logical arguments to suggest there is.

But He is not interventionist to the
extent that some people expect.

If everyone had their problems
solved immediately by God, it
would defeat the purpose
of the mechanism of things,
ie, as Prince said, for us to learn to
respect one another...
among
other things such as
learning what love is and what
it isn't and the
different kinds thereof.

These aspects of
faith make the most sense
to me and I understand
where Prince is coming from.
I do not believe that the Bible
is just a bunch of stories,
nor is it 100% correct about
everything, but if you
take it as symbolic
of the way
things are, that is
where the "truth" of
it lies.

If he is happy, so be it. However, sounds a little like brainwashing to me...has anyone read the book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" by Christopher Hitchens? Interesting read...

It seems like Prince has been pretty fucked up in the head regarding religious bullshit etc for a long time now. Good for him, if he's happy etc, but I'd hate to try and have a conversation with the guy. How any interviewer can get through their questions without throttling him is beyond me.

God is a personal experience.

If you don't believe, good for YOU and your life. That's the path you've chosen. Prince and others have chosen to believe in God and many have experiences to back up that belief.

Prince is speaking from the heart. He's always spoken of God in some form. The belief on some level was always there.

IMO it sounds like Prince is saying that the Truth will set us free.
The truth that if we live according to God's Law, the consequence will be freedom. And proof of it is the way Prince is free to use material, earthly methods to promote the message. When false apprearances and facades fade, the Truth will remain and freedom will prevail. yes guitar rainbow

Not necessarily. It's just a difference of opinion. Even though I happen to think that religion is for idiots, it doesn't mean I'd ever question your right to believe whatever you want. That is, unless practising your beliefs were demonstrably detrimental to society (which, being honest, is probably not a tough argument to make in the case of organised religion).

So, do you think, for example, C.S. Lewis, a one time atheist who
regained his Christianity later in life, was an idiot?

I myself was once an atheist, then agnostic and finally
a believer. In a sense we are all agnostic because there is no
proof for existence or non-existance of deity,
but as all belief stems from an emotional, "inner world"
response, I think it is unfair to call someone an idiot
for citing their inner world experience to be different than yours.

To go one step further and say that your inner world, emotional
experience is proof enough for you as an individual, to call
yourself a believer in a deity, is simply a matter of personal choice,
surely?

Now, as for ORGANISED religion, it definitely has a number
of faults, but that is usually a case of there
being a problem with the messenger/s, not the message.
We ALL have a religion we adhere to, it
just depends on the intensity of good or bad will with
which we live it which denotes whether it might
have a good or bad effect on society.

I found this bit amazing:

".. because they're caught up in worldly things like women, sex, drugs."

So he considers women to be "things" and "worldly" ?!

In contrary to what - men ?

Strange attitude i hafta say.

Sometimes i get the impression Prince himself doesn't have a clue what the f*** he's talking about.

Same, I think he's trying hard to come off cool/collected/conservative. I think the reason this troubles me is because it seems false to a degree. I don't doubt Prince's faith in the least, but I don't think he should be ashamed of his older music/tours. They helped mold him to himself present day, and they don't deserve to be repressed as such. I think by "women" he ment being promiscuous. Still...it's a little primitive.

I hope he stays peaceful.

Yeah, and saying that women are part of men's downfall - then a few sentences later saying he would take the advice of Solomon because he had a thousand wives. I was a little confused by that.

Don't be confused - Prince is just a bit of a cranky old misogynist smile

You mean like religion itself? The most closed minded, intolerant and judgemental mindset in the history of the world?

Who started it? Who started telling us all we were going to hell if we didn't straighten up and fly right? Who started in with grand claims of The Truth and inside knowledge of God? Who started making laws, killing people and locking them up for not playing these rules? Burning witches, fearing scientists, calling people heretics and making it a crime to engage in oral sex with my wife in the privacy of my own home? (That last one is still on the books in some places).

Some folks DO tend to get a bit intolerant when they get shoved around like that. I'm one of them.

We can take it to P&R if you like.

And it's funny how so often the vehemently anti-religious
are the most aggressive... "we can take it to p & r".

I totally agree with much of what you have said
but there IS a distinction
between those who are merely peacefully religious and those who
are religious zealouts who have misinterpreted doctrine
to support their own particular brand of mental illness or
what have you.

FUNDAMENTAL religious DOGMA certainly deservedly gets a bad rap for
the pain and confusion it has caused, but what people
consistently misunderstand from a populist viewpoint
is that religion merely means the "root" and that
scientific viewpoints without religion and
religious viewpoints without science
are both equally lacking in balanced judgment.

Essentially the world would be a lot more
messed up if either one, science OR religion
were removed, and both play important parts in
being both progressive and destructive
in the world.

It all depends on how extreme
viewpoints are.
Tolerance is paramount in everything
and power in any situation of belief
is the thing most likely to corrupt.

Now, if we are to continue, perhaps we
should head to that other forum?
But quite honestly, I am happy with
my own point of view on the matter
already and I'm sure you are, too.

Yeah, pretty much. Believe whatever nonsense you want, whatever helps you get through the day. I'll do the same. It isn't "intolerant" if someone thinks your beliefs are a load of bullshit, it's just a difference of perspective. There's a distinction between respecting someone's beliefs, and respecting someone's right to their beliefs.

As for Prince's faith, it is none of my business and if it makes him happy, good for him. It's revealing though, in this interview Prince starts off with his shields up, responding with the usual cryptic mumbo jumbo to straightforward questions... but as they keep talking it reads as though he's become more engaged, speaking about the business, about fame etc. There's clearly more to the guy than the happy-clappy mystic shit he puts up as his first line of defence, and it is interesting to see more of the human being underneath now and again.

Cool interview, although this will be the first issue of Giant that's interested me in a long time. It used to be a general entertainment mag(with a heavy focus on film), and it was much better. Guess they weren't making enough money with that, though.
