As far as I know, she sold all her Prince stuff after that "Convention" incident in 1992 (or 91?) and her magazine ceased to exist.Don´t know if she ever became a fan again.

So, what happened? I was a member and remember it all stopping quite abruptly but :eye: never found out the true story. Did she actually stop being a fan of his music?

i was listening 2 a tape of an old BBC radio review of the 'nude tour' the other day, with Eileen featured on it talking about her view on Prince and his appeal 2 fans.

i remember the first few editions of the 'Controversy' fanzine, A4 photocopy with drawings instead of photo's ! (at least it cut down on copyright problems !)

Speaking personally, i owe Eileen many thanx 4 the best Prince xperience i ever had. The opportunity 2 meet, talk 2, shake hands with and even get filmed with Prince, b4 having front row tix the same nite 4 the 'Lovesexy' tour in the round, with Prince recognizing us and playing large chunks of the show just standing infront of us b4 explaining his view that if he wants 2 thank god 4 his blessings what's it got 2 do with anyone else, and who's it hurtin ? All the time standing 10 feet away looking straight down at us, with 12,000 other people wonderin just what was going on!

if were gettin on this trip... what about Chris Dawson and 'The Revolution' and 'Crystal Ball' !!

B4 there was the org, HQ, npgmusic club, heck, B4 there was the internet... there was 'Controversy', not just a fanzine, not just a club, but 4 those of us outside of the USA it was the only real lifeline 2 what was happening in relation 2 Prince, a chance 2 meet other fans, get concert tickets (whisper it, but Prince even sent in handwritten notes 2 go in the fanzine !).

And Eileen Murton was the editor and driving force behind the 'Controversy' fanclub

In the very early 90s, either in 91 or perhaps 1992, there was this event called the Convention which was organized by Paisley Park and the Controversy fanzine. It was some sort of predecessor to the Celebrations a decade later.
Fans met in Mpls, the old NPG mingled with the people, MTV was there, Tony M sort of moderated the whole thing with an MTV mike in his hand, etc.

I´m too lazy to look it up now but if memory serves me right, Eileen Murton got angry because of certain things that I don´t want to mention here since that would be based purely on hearsay, rumors and gossip, so I will leave it up to others to give you an idea of why they had a fallout.

I've posted about Eileen a number of times as I thought she was fantastic and ran the club purely for the love of Prince and his fans. She went well above and beyond what you would expect someone who ran a fanclub to do, and she gave a lot of the club members unique opportunities, some of which have already been mentioned in this thread.

Whilst the convention incident really upset her, the straw that broke the preverbial camel's back was the Wembley Stadium gig and the things that happened around that. It was only a few days later when, on her long suffering answer machine, she announced the closure of the club.

Yes, that all went tits up, didn't it ?

There was some party that was organised (I sent 20 or £30 for tickets).

The police got involved, all pretty messy and I never saw my cash or tickets or the party.

Chris Dawson I heard that he went back to being a carpenter.

But does any body remember Dream Nation from the ninties, it was run by a guy called Daiv Powell, he also did some Prince parties all over the UK, some which where very funky!

Eileen was great. I loved Controversy and it was cool knowing there were other Prince fans. She did it for the love of Prince music. I got the impression that the organisation was going to become an official fan club and broke down near the end negotiations.

Eileen was an absolute gem. I sometimes think that we know too much about Prince now due to the net etc etc and there is little mystery left back then we all waited for the next magazine to drop through the letterbox so we could read about our musical hero as it was basically the only source for information. Apart from that she got me some great seats at the concerts.

If your out there Eileen we owe you one and will never forget your dedication to us humble fans.

Thank you smile
