Question: Why has Prince never released a *concert* album?

If he gathered 10 great performances out of hundreds, wouldn't it outsell any album that is on par with Musicology?

Also, if he had an optional CD with DVD of the performances????

It would be better than most of his albums from the last decade+, but I doubt it would sell any more than them. In fact, probably less. Live albums aren't usually big sellers.

I'm talking about something more than a little Vegas show. I haven't bought a CD in a long long time but I would purchase Musicology live or any of his big arena shows.

His Lovesexy concert is a cult classic. You can rent it at the video store in my town in some odd format. The sound isn't great but yet his energy and the performance (as we all know) rocks.

Every iconic band has released a concert album. I usually hate it, as seems like an excuse not to get to work in the studio. But Prince is always releasing something or in the works of something, why not double it up? Seems odd.

I really don't want either the Musicology or Lovesexy show released.

What would be REALLY impressive is a box set covering the 2002 celebration. Preferably on DVD, but audio would be cool also.

Or perhaps there'll be one covering his upcoming London shows? hmmm

I would like it if a box set was released covering the best document of each tour.

Why wouldn't you want that released? Musicology is arguably his best concert set ever??

And why not release this 2002 also? I don't understand why an artist who's concerts are hard to come by and very popular don't get released. Bad business.

I actually didn't enjoy the Musicology show all that much. It started out great, but he lost me somewhere around The Question Of U/The One or U Got The Look & Life O' The Party and didn't get me back until the Purple Rain encore. shrug

His shows varied apparently. But the two back to back ones I attended were nothing but classics, the accoustic set with a great version of Satisfaction, and a small amount of Musicology. I caught the Purple Rain, Lovesexy and Musicology. Obviously, Musicology was the best. Just hearing Controversy played out full was enough for the admission price.

At this point he's probably worried most with the marketability of releasing a live album.

So he should either do what Pearl Jam did and put something together that's quality, but very cheap to produce to sell in stores. His core audience would buy more than enough copies to make it worth the cost to put it together.

Or...he should just remaster the best shows and put them up for $20 each on his website.

He's had so many tours at this point with such varying setlists and bands that to release only one live album as a definitive statement probably wouldn't satisfy anyone. One person's Lovesexy aftershow is another person's 3121 in Vegas is yet another's Purple Rain in Syracuse.

Nah, you're missing the point. Lets just say the Musicology tour for the sake of argument. Basically, who is going to be disatisfied with that? In fact, for the people in the age group that wanted to go but couldn't..... I wouldn't be surprised if it topped album sales for a month!

To my knowledge, I have heard the majority say that Prince's best concerts were/are during the "LoveSexy Era". However, I am hearing a few people here say different. So, somebody tell me: "WHAT WINS?!!?"

Plenty of people would be dissatisfied with that. "All the classic Prince tours, and we get Musicology? What about Sign O' The Times? What about Small Club?" And on and on.

Personally, I think something like a highlights of the Xenophobia celebration would be the most satisfying to the most people. So many awesome performances and rare songs. But that's just me. It was probably the greatest Prince live experience in history if you were there and I was shrug

Interesting preference - but 2 me, lovesexy/SOTT are definitely his purple live highs....BUT,

He probably refuses to release them as he see's imperfections in live shows - and on top of that, he knows everything is booted, so.....

On the later, what the buyer would get from his soundboard is nothing compared to what we get off shitty audience recordings - but maybe Princey see's it purely as a live experience - not once that should be relived. And the only reason we got ONA was bcuz fans have been complaining for years about zero 'official' live material

Who can say!

i think ONA is the closest you'll get Rockability. i don't have it yet, so i'll have to see how it leaves me feeling. i saw the PR, Hit N Run, Lovesexy tours and a few others but i didn't see Musicology (had ample chances here in Detroit but just didn't go; now i regret it because i can't COMPARE). i think some valid points have been made about how he sees "live shows". unique and special in their own way, EXPERIENCED perhaps and not CAPTURED. i like the Pearl Jam idea though, highly unlikely with him tho. Hate to think about it, but perhaps something will come thru posthumously.

Yes! Like Dylan, who tends to release almost every concert-tour on cd.
