Why Purple?

I doubt this thread will be open for very long.
But I wonder.

Why is Prince always associated with the color "purple"?
I mean, he wore purple before he got the idea for the song "purple rain"

Is that his favorite color? Or just the color he thought he looked the best in?

Or is he the only one who knows the answer and I'm just wasting my time asking you guys.

It was said to be his favorite color back in the day, but I read that when he did Parade/under the cherry moon, he changed it to "Banana Yellow"!

first mention of Purple I know of is in the song "Leaving for New York." I think it was recorded in 1976. The line is something like "laying here on the Purple Lawn."

Prince was obsessed with purple on his 1999 album: the album cover is purple and the 1999 'Judgement Day' lyrics includes "The sky was all purple....".. his jacket worn in the video and on tour was purple..

i do know that the color purple (no pun intended) is associated w/ royalty, and his name is Prince. So... maybe that has something to do with it (?)
