But it is more than possible that Prince may have tried to 'preach' a little bit to Mavis, who may not have been in the mood for it. Wendy and Lisa etc would be used to all that kinda mumbo jumbo by now.

I think it's a great thing that he seemed like the 'old Prince' to Mavis... she was with him at some of the best times (of course not to say W&L weren't...)

Mavis Staples is already from church and has been in church for years ... way before Prince thought about doing his thing.. so why would he need to preach to someone already in church.. unless he's trying to 'convert' her to his way?

the catholic get involved with communities and the vatican with politics. muslims get heavily involved with politics as a form of reaching out. evangelicals have their mall-churches and their tv shows...others preach on tv as well.

witnesses prefer to preach one on one | door to door which is a far more intimate and personal approach yet they get slammed for it...

does that make since?

and who are we to say which form of "reaching out" is wrong?

i wasn't even suggesting that JWs or prince are that "insidious" - though if witnessing isn't about conversion (for lack of a better term, i suppose), what is the point of witnessing?

for the JW's witnessing is two-fold, it is their "work" which is a requirement for salvation as they don't believe in the deity of Christ (for Christians salvation cannot be attained by works Eph. 2:8; but as a RESULT of salvation they do engage in "good works" - James 2:17; notice the difference; JW's arent known for a work that is benevolence to widows, the poor, the hungry, etc. instead Saturday morning is their work and the rejection they receive is understood as "persecution"). as a result of going door to door, they are working towards the hope that they will be a part of the 1000 year reign of peace. they believe that those who will go to heaven have already been selected (the 144,000), thus the best they can hope for and those they convert is the 1000 year reign of Christ on earth. so conversion is a goal, but a secondary one.

God forgive me for what I am about to say:

Prince, please. I respect your religion but question its authority. God is, has, and will be about love. You have always song and showed love. Why do you need the JWs when all you need is prayer.

Many of your friends love God and live our lifes to reflect his glory. But God created us to be unique individuals, not what other's want us to be.

Come to the dark side. Perhaps then you'll find the true light.

Kind of a bizarre comment if you ask me. It's not like every person around Prince or working with him is a JW; nor have I ever heard it said JWs can only hang out with other JWs. Religion can sure put up barriers but sometimes the barriers are simply imagined.

most JWs consider non JWs "worldly people" and members are urged not to hang out with non JWs, this is a fact, like most cults, members are not supposed to associate with outsiders

well, i think you're starting an argument where there's not one to start, my friend...unless i worded my post poorly, in which case the best i can do is apologize and try to clarify.

i'm not saying the JW methods are WRONG. and i tried to point out that "convert" is perhaps not the best word to use (what is?). but they are most CERTAINLY an evangelical religion, unless i have completely screwed up the entire concept of evangelical/non-evangelical religion.

which is entirely possible. i mean, for a while i thought mary waranov and tim curry were the same person. anything goes with my brain.

my POINT was, if someone is, by nature of their faith, dutybound to "show the truth" to others, some people who are just as passionate about a different faith may take offense. that was my point. it wasn't me harshing on the JW faith - just making an observation about human behavior.

questions? lol

*takes deep breathe*

these type subjects .. *sigh* .. the Koran says.. if u dont 'convert' to their religion .. they have a right to kill u.. I will be the 1st to say.. that type of 'reaching out' with their method .. surely doesnt make anybody feel warm n loved.. and any religion 'forcing' ppl to abide by a certain code..(like JW's do and some other religions) to me.. only shows the 'control' they want over ppl..

I found in Salt lake City that Mormons had the best tactic for conversion. They peppered the Tabernacle area (a tourist spot) with cute young blonde girls in summer dresses who would initiate conversation with you, eventually offering to tell you more about the Book and how you could get a free copy.

(shakes her head) Whenever he's playing in Chicago I sing a few
songs with him. But, cut a record together? I don't think so. He's
a Jehovah's witness now. That makes things difficult. Because I am not

Have you heard her new album? It is really "southern protest songs", with a "dirty/gritty funk" instrumentation. Production is the opposite to polished, Ry Cooder on board.

Some really excellent, spine-tangling songs on it.

Anyone else here has heard it?

the more i hear about this album, the more i want to listen to it. i may have to check it out soon.

Interesting. Do you think they attempt sexual conversion as well as spiritual?

I guess I probably know the answer to that question, though.

I understand what Mavis is trying to say about prince not suppose to be hanging out with her because he is a jehovah witness.

One of my employees is a johovah witness, but will never discuss her faith or preach in work. However nor will she attend staff parties/gettogeathers/dinners as she cannot hang out with us, but she can work with other non jehovah witnesses
