Greatest Romance...better than I remembered.

I listen to Rave very infrequently and have probably not listened to it all the way through in two years. I was listening to it this morning and I noticed that "Greatest Romance" isn't quite as bad as I believed all these years. I have always blamed the release of that as a first single was a major factor in the album not being successful. The song to me just never had that hook that would demand repeat listenings. But you know, it does kind of settle in your ear in a nice way if you listen to it without the lead balloon of expectations hanging on it. It's not classic Prince but it's a nice enough song that should have performed better than it did. If P had released "So Far So Pleased" or something first and then TGRES, it might have actually been a hit. All water under the bridge now but the song is growing on me.

Ya know what? I liked everything about that song since I first heard it. The tune is catchy and I think the lyrics are very cleverly written.

But I'm one of the minority who likes the Rave album. cool

And the video is in my top 3 Prince vids.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Greatest Romance is my "destination song" from Rave. Meaning its usually WHY i put the album on. Great song writing, IMO. especially the line where he says,

now your mind is open to poetry seldom heard, your heart has never been broken until you've heard these words....your body was designed, to respond to mine, in spite of your desire to mold me....

that's such a deep lyric to me.

glad you re-discovered this gem.

....so this is where u end and u and i begin...

me too.

The video is so beautiful and it puts the song into perspective for me.

He really paints the picture of love so beautifully with this song, I cannot begin to say how incredible I think it is. The most romantic song I've heard him write up to this point.

He makes "love" a work of art and in the song, he just does it so perfectly. Having never been in love, he helped me understand what it really means.

I love this song too! clapping I think it is one of his best slow jams. Actually, I like the whole album, so I guess that puts me in the minority as well. A long time ago I had a thread about how this was my Mom's favorite Prince song and what songs were other parent's favorites.

I am glad you re-discovered it. I think alot of people just didn't give it a chance.

"So this is where you end ... and you and I begin ..."

It really is a great song - but not first-single material though. Still, one of the gems off that CD.

Same with me. I go crazy over Prince songs that I love from the first time.

There's an elegance about it that helps define how truly great a songwriter Prince is. He wears his heart on his sleeve while singing it. And the rap helped make it more than just a "sappy" love song. It somehow works so well without breaking the flow of the song.

I see it as one of his greatest accomplishments... that I know of to this point.

darn.

After getting back to this thread, I've got the song in my head.

Today is the birthday of another artist I follow, so I'm spending the day listening thru his music.

Basically taking a day off from Prince's music. A well needed break after coming to an very interesting, ground-shaking conclusion about TGE (in a good way).

But this song is tempting me to at least watch the video cuz its a beautiful video.
