He recently said that he's inspired by Amy Winehouse. Also, I read that some of the lyrics from GLAM SLAM were inspired from SUFFRAGETTE CITY by David Bowie.  wish U were here baby, on me--

I think he said he RESPECTED Amy's voice and talent, not that he was "inspired" by her. | |

Joni Mitchell Kate Bush Marc Bolan/T. Rex (seriously, compare "Cream" and "Peach" to "Get It On") Gustav Mahler (just because he's named in "Eye Hate U", but European classical composers in general) New Wave/skinny tie bands like The Cars (circa "When You Were Mine") The Rolling Stones (play "Emotional Rescue" next to "Kiss" some time) possibly Bowie (in that they're both ever-changing, style-shifting chameleons), but I can't really pinpoint any direct examples. And, er... Jesus, haha. | |

But,to conclude, the most obvious and clear influence from white artists IMO comes from Joni Mitchell (his use of 'space' in arrangements, the sound of his background vocals, the way of using chords) and The Beatles (the use of sound effects, string arrangements and exotic instruments, the Lennosque effect he sometimes uses on his vocals, the way he stretches songs to become 'suites', and more general: a sense of musical creativity and stylistic freedom he shares with the fab four) Ah. good call on Todd Rundgren. Just for the record, Chaos and Disorder is a really white album with clear influences from the stones, right the wrong almost sounds like a country and western song, C&D has songs on it that sound like a roadhouse album, thats probably why I like listening to it in my car so much.. Someone also mentioned the Rocky Horror Picture show, Ive always AGREED! I mean Same december (from C&D) and I like it there (from C&D) could have been on the movie itself! The sexuality and imagery of that movie is reflected a lot in P´s music (not just those 2 songs). On a final note, I remember years ago Prince saying that he was a fan of 10,000 maniacs, anyone remember them? I dont know if they influenced him, but just thought Id mention it... | |
