The most obvious one, as admitted by Prince himselve, is of course Joni Mitchell.
Next to that i can hear the influence of the Beatles quite often, especially on the material released during the period 1985 - 1988. Songs like Paisley Park, Pop Life, Christopher Tracey's Parade and I wonder U would sound as they do without the influence of 'the fab four'. Apart from that i hear some incidental influences from Queen (Thunder, Three Chains of Gold), Led Zeppelin (some of his more raw guitar songs), The Beach Boys (Venus de Milo, Still would stand all time), Some new wave artists (you can hear touches of Elvis Costello, The Talking Heads and the B-52's on albums like Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999, as well as on his productionwork for Vanity 6 and the Time). Next to the influences from white popmusicians, i can hear the influence of classical composers Igor Stravinsky and Gustav Mahler on the songs he created with the help of Clare Fisher (especially on Crystal Ball and Mia Bocca). | |

I have forgotten a few more incidental influences:
You can hear a Rolling Stones influence on the song Uptown, Condition of the Heart is very Tod Rundgrenesque, The Cross resembles the song Heroin from the Velvet Underground, some of the ballads on For You recall Michael Franks, while the song Under the Cherry Moon 'echoes' different Brecht-Weil compositions. But,to conclude, the most obvious and clear influence from white artists IMO comes from Joni Mitchell (his use of 'space' in arrangements, the sound of his background vocals, the way of using chords) and The Beatles (the use of sound effects, string arrangements and exotic instruments, the Lennosque effect he sometimes uses on his vocals, the way he stretches songs to become 'suites', and more general: a sense of musical creativity and stylistic freedom he shares with the fab four) | |

[Edited 5/17/07 7:52am] No offence, but the above influence list is blindingly obvious, 2elijah. I was going for an influence not often talked about. Watch Saturday Night fever, and u'll see a lot of this guy in Prince - i'm sure he was taking notes back in the 70's. There is ALOT of Italian in Prince, the way he carries himself, and dresses. I'm English, but i've been to Italy a few times, and its not hard to make the connection. They're a beautiful people - i was walking round with my tongue hanging out

not that i'm a big fan of elvis or anything
(my mom sure was during the early years) but i seem to remember prince performing quite a few of the songs he made famous one time prince & band performed a long version of "teddy bear" i believe he brought people up on stage to dance during the song too | |
