Soul Tattoo

Soul Tattoo: a song that stays with you wherever you go, that warms your heart and connects with your soul in a special way that no other song can.

Over the past couple of days, I feel that prince's Gold has become my own soul tattoo because...

* it is currently helping me through a time of confusion and chaos
* I loved it from first listen and I realized the connection then
* my ears perk up whenever I hear it
* several times, it made my soul cry
* I felt prince reach me through the song and the past couple of times I'd listen to it or have it in my head
* it always tries to teach something new and/or prince tries to teach me something thru it.

and for several other reasons, too many to name. It's such a beautiful song and I don't think any other Prince song has affected me the same way. Although "Purple Rain" is my favorite, Gold comes in at a close second for these reasons.

So I wanted to ask if anyone else had a Prince song that affected them in the same way, that they could confidently call their "soul tattoo."

Disclaimer: I didn't come up with the phrase "Soul Tattoo". A Christian "boy band" called Plus One did. Here are the lyrics.

And it's pretty approriate because the connection I have with Gold is a bit of a religious one.

I really associate with The Holy River...the lyrics are strong...I get a feeling that P spoke from the heart with that one.

Lots of other songs too though...Free has always been a favorite of mine for similar reasons.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I only hope I get more responses.

I also wanted to add, this sounds a little cliqué, but it's okay to say that you think that Prince wrote your "soul tattoo" for you in particular. heh...

awww... that's sweet.

Even with the huge fan I am, I don't think I could ever say that. It sounds too huge to me, so I figure only songs would be "tattooed" on my soul.

But that's just me. If you feel that strongly, go ahead. thumbs up!

I too believe that Gold is a very inpirational song.
when i listen to the chorus

"Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold.
And everybody wants to tell what's already been told.
What's the use of money if you ain't gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire, there is cold.
All the glitters ain't gold.
"

I just love the way Prince uses words in his own way to make you think of SO many different things at once. There are a few other songs of his that have really opened up my eyes to life and all things it in. He is a very influential person to my life. There are so many things that i "thought I saw" but never really did "see" untill Prince opened my eyes for me. I have him to thank everyday for the way I see alot of things. And your analysis on that song was very good.

My favorite part of Gold is.....
There's a lady, 99 years old
If she led a good life, heaven takes her soul
Now that's a theory and if U don't wanna know
Step aside and make a way 4 those who want 2 go!

I too can listen to this song forver, then again Emancipation is on heavy rotation at my house!

Thanx. The verses really haven't gotten to me as much as the chorus. I don't know. It's like the song and I had a spiritual connection when I heard it for the first time... just the way it resonates warms my heart. Everytime I hear it, something else comes to mind and I feel like I wear it on my sleeve wherever I go. It comes to mind occasionally and just prince's spiritual connection to it is enough to make me go insane with happiness.

Each verse does have its significance. I could interpret the first one, but just choose not to. As the last verse, as PaisleyPark5083 mentioned, something about it makes me smile, especially the last line when I watch him sing it in the video.

Having joined prince.org after about 15 years of being a Prince fan, it's quite refreshing to read about others that truly love songs that I've personally "pushed aside" as mediocre Prince songs. "White Mansion" and "Gold" are among the ones I never paid too much attention to, yet they seem to be talked about a lot. The reasons why I didn't like "Gold" too much are because the main line "all that glitters ain't gold" is such an old proverb, and its most famous use in a song was "Stairway to Heaven", and it seemed as though Prince was really trying his shot at another Purple Rain, when there can never be another 'Purple Rain'. But seeing as how "Gold" is someone's 'soul tattoo', maybe the next time I'll listen to it I'll appreciate it on a different level. I love how everyone here seems to be so honest. I'm really getting addicted to this. I hope you keep it up! smile

That's the magic spell Prince casts over us. I hope you find something you like in "Gold" when you listen to it next. I don't believe that it can be another Purple Rain. I barely compare the two at all, but the one thing they have in common is that I find them both uplifting. Gold has just helped me more.
