PrintableFor ME, with the exception of I&C, I think 3121 was a solid and consistent album. Perhaps 3.5 stars. Not a 5 star killer like PR, SOTT, TGE or a 4 star hit like DM, 1999, ATWIAD, Parade, Lovesexy, D&P, TRC but certainly up there with Batman, GB,  , Come, Emancipation.
He has certainly released worse/less good albums during his career (but of course this is all subjective because the music I like might not be the same as what you like). For me the real test is whether I can still put the CD on in about 5 years and still enjoy it (as I always play a new album to death, with the exception of NEWS). 3121 *might* have been a bit stronger if he had rocked out a little bit more by cranking up the guitars in the mix, particularly on Fury! I think many Prince fans want him to stay on the "rock" level, which he does well, but is not and never was limited to. On 3121 he covered quite a few genres of music, a little something for everyone.
[Edited 2/28/07 8:50am] Most long term Prince fans are used to him doing all of the above - Perhaps the difference is that he used to synthesise those genres into Prince, whereas now he is arguably diluting Prince into those genres. And as to him staying "on the rock level"! Have you been in a coma since 1985? | |
