New Prince album with Beatles covers?

I found this on HQ

http://www.normclarke.com/

Prince's run at the Rio may be brief one.

Alicia Jacobs, entertainment reporter at KVBC-TV, Channel 3, reported on Sunday that Prince will end his Rio deal on March 31.

Jacobs said Prince, who took over the Club Rio showroom in November, is going on tour to promote his latest CD.

However, most revealing, perhaps, was the group of uber entertainment executives who attended a private Prince performance that began about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, after his main show at his 3121 club.

Among a group of 30 guests in a small backroom were ABC entertainment honcho David Saltz, Apple Records boss Jonathan Clyde, X, who produced most of Usher's major hits, and Siegfried and Roy's longtime manager Bernie Yuman.

Saltz is reportedly working on huge Beatles-related Prince project.

Prince spent most of the private concert singing arrangements of Beatles songs.

Connect the dots.

A 3121 rep said the show is indefinite and "there's not a confirmed end date as of yet."

Just speculating:
If you 'connect the dots' with the thread from giovanni777 about a new prince album called 'revolution' it would mean an album with beatles covers ( since there is a beatles song called 'revolution' )
hmmm

your opinions please , just some stupid speculating or ...

I could handle that as long as he didnt add horns to A Day In The Life.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Agreed- if he wants to do a little side project with covers and release it over the internet that's cool. But I would be greatly disspointed if his next big project was a cover album...I highly doubt he would do an entire album of beatles songs though- doesn't make much sense.

Considering we hear about new Prince projects more often than I tie my shoelaces, I'm trying not to give this much thought.

However...

My initial thoughts upon reading this over breakfast is that this would never happen, and if it did, it would be awful. As a huge Prince fan and a huge Beatles fan (yes, my sig has been the same since at least 2001), I can't help but think I would be disappointed by this. Prince and The Beatles are two completely different musical entities for me. The one time they came together, on While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the Hall Of Fame, was supremely sublime - but he hasn't played that since, which I've taken to be a sign that he knows it would not work again - it was one of those magical once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Prince's musical style(s) are so different from The Beatles, even with how varied Prince and The Beatles were themselves. as much as everyone has always claimed ATWIAD to be a Beatles-influenced album, I really have not heard that much. A little, but not much. There's just not enough common ground to make this exciting for me. If Prince were to do a covers-project of one artist, I would think Jimi Hendrix, James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone would be more fitting.

Since breakfast, though, I've been thinking about this more...

Primarily, the fact that the Apple Records 'boss' was there is a huge positive factor, in my eyes. If this is all true, it seems that Prince is working with Apple (and therefore, the remaining Beatles and estates). IF (and this is a big IF) this is an album (which fits with the Revolution title mentioned recently), Prince would be able to release it on Apple Records, which I can only think would be very classy and give it a huge amount of credibility as legitimate Beatles product. Paul/Ringo/Yoko/Olivia also have the power of veto over any Apple Records release, which means they would need to approve this, which I think is appropriate given that Prince doesn't like people covering his songs without his permission.

Also, an ABC exec was there (again, allegedly). I take this to mean a potential TV special.

Remember that The Beatles catalogue is going to be available at iTunes and other online music stores sometime this year, and Beatles CD remasters are also coming at some point this year. Think of the marketing push for all of that. Think of the new wave of Beatlemania. And think of the Superbowl-killing Prince doing an ABC primetime music special performing Beatles songs. Paul McCartney has always been a Prince fan, and given that he would have to approve an Apple Records release, I can imagine he may want to perform with Prince. And since Ringo and Sheila E have been playing together for years, you think he might like to play too?

And Love has been a huge critical (and commercial?) success - I am glad that Love and 3121 have been going on in Vegas at the same time, since it has allowed Prince to soak in some Beatles vibes through osmosis. And according to Mr. Hayes, Prince treated everyone in the 3121 crew to a night seeing Love, which I thought was a classy thing to do and showed that he appreciated the show and the music.

But yeah, this is all coming from one rumor... We'll see...

hammer Olivia Harrison, not Cynthia Lennon...

I hope it's not what it implies. I think this is a BAD idea, personally. Beatle fans - and there's a lot of them - are very protective of their music, and I'm certain he is destined for much backlash no matter the results.
Baby, that was much too fast... 1958-2016

I would love to hear some Beatles covers. Beatles came to the US and their music crossed color lines. I love their songs. They came to the US in the turbulent 60s and their music touched so many. Here's some of my favorites...

Let it Be
Yesterday
Something
She Loves You
The Long and Winding Road <--- a weeper, very sentimental and classic song
Hey Jude <-- another classic!
Come Together
All You Need is LoveA Hard Day's Night
All My Loving
Can't Buy Me Love
Michelle
Get Back
Revolution
...just to name a few

Even if he just covered, "Come Together", "The Long and Winding Road", "Hey Jude","Yesterday", Let it Be" and even "All You Need Is Love"....those are the songs that would be the right choices, for the state of where our country is in right now, like the Iraq War, Darfur, Global fight on Aids, Racism, Present day slavery, Hunger, Homelessness, etc..We need to hear songs like that. That's how the Beatles brought people together through their music during one of the most turbulent times in history..the 60s.

I'm with Booyah, I love both the Beatles and Prince, but to me they're like apples and oranges. The prospect of a Beatles covers album from Prince doesn't get me salivating. When prince tried to do beatles-ey psychedelia on ATWIAD, it didn't really come off...and likewise the Beatles are many things, but not particularly funky or soulful (in the genre sense of the terms...they obviously "had" soul, and funky musical moments (baby i'm a rich man, the bass in the hey jude outro, etc))

Prince doing a philly soul covers album...now that would be something....

While I love both the Beatles and Prince, I just don't see how this idea makes any sense for Prince. Sure, it'll give him a lot of exposure, but will it really be the best way to ride the momentum he has now? I just don't think so. We'll see if this turns out to be true.

it looks to me more like prince is pitching or wooing these folks for a multimedia attraction, maybe in vegas, maybe to tour, that would be like the cirque de soleil "love" show, only with p's music. that's what i thought when i read this story earlier.

the "prince sings the beatles" album idea does NOT compute. lol

Thanks, I just thought some of those songs would be right for the "sign of the times" (no pun intended) our country is going through right now. As a matter of fact I would add that song "Revolution" to the list. However, I don't remember how that song sounds, I looked up the lyrics and it kind of relates to today. Would be a good choice if that's what he plans on doing with the new album, if there is one. Makes you wonder about his song choices "Best of You" and "All Along The Watchtower", like someone mentioned that it could have been referenced to the Bush Administration. Maybe he's focusing on songs for the next album that relates to the conditions the world is in right now...but I'm just pondering.

Sounds unlikely.

An album of rock covers is unlikely, too, but maybe more likely, since he hasn't only been covering the Beatles, but Jimi, Foos, Chuck Berry & even a tiny bit of Queen.

But then with Prince we can always expect the unexpected. He probably saw Love, and maybe he developed a new interest in the Beatles.

Hey, I'd love it! My two favorites! But he'd better give the songs the attention they deserve.

Hmm interesting we shall see. I've kinda had a feeling that his next album would be a covers album and likely and internet release. I kinda hope it's not just limited to beatles covers but cool none the less. I'm just thinking this because of all the covers he's been doing of late!
