I was thinking the same thing...like seeing a poster of CARRIE or THE EXCORSIST...I love it...but it has a creepiness/eerieness to it!

It's creepy because P's album cover is creepy as well! I remember many girls at that time thought P looked evil. They dug P's music but they didn't see him as a sex symbol. I can't tell u how many times I heard that P's eyes looked scary. This was during the Controversy period. This is the very reason I believe P put his eye on the center of the record of the 1999 album. He probably heard the same feedback about his eyes. It's interesting because P, through both of his Controversy and 1999 periods, was largely seen as a rebel, a maverick and an outsider. He had such a strong cult following. I'm sure females fancied him but the vibe from girls that were into P at that time definately dug him but found him kinda weird and he had that dander quality to him. His image, especially during Controversy, was very edgy. He wasn't someone to be fuck with. He toally softened his image by the time of Purple Rain. But this poster represented P to a tee at that time.

Umm, sorry about that, ya'll. "dander"? I meant to type "danger". And "toally". Ya'll know it to be "totally".

The imagery in the poster is classic P. And very much in step with his other posters during that period. Check the huge crucfix hanging on the wall. That echoes the crucifx hanging on the wall behind him while he's posing in the shower. This poster came with the original pressings of the album. Another poster during this period which also was used for the 12' long version of "Let's Work" featuring his band. They're all standing in front of a brick wall with writing sprayed on it. You have to guess what the words say because their bodies block some of the letters. Same thing here with the chalkboard. Same concept. Same concept again on the back of the album Controversy with the newspaper clippings. U can't make out what some of it says.

It's cool how it looks like the girl's hair and the flag are being blown by wind. Very artistic.

check out the placement of her hands on the album. eek
there's no way you can physically hold an album like that, and still have both elbows show lol
All these weird, eery things keep me staring at it.
It's not as simple and straight forward as I thought at first glance.

Only two things can blow if they paste images together to make up one picture. That's what they used to do in P's pics all the time. It's the same thing as today's photshop. They especially did it when P posed with his band. To make P look much taller, they took a seperate pic of him and then just placed him down in front of the others so he wouldn't look so short.

Totally agree..people were convinced he worshiped Satan.

the girl reminds me of the little girl on 'The Ring'..you know the one that crawled outta the tv set....scared the shit outta me...she reminds me of all those horror film school girls that were slaughtered!

i want a copy of the poster as well...

Exactly like the girl from The Ring. DAMN...But yeah, without getting into a different topic, I don't doubt that P did a little more than dabble with the occult during the early 80's.

This picture is simply amazing. You can go in all different directions explaining the imagery in this picture and it's pretty evident where Prince was going with this; he was critizing society. So here's my two cents:
The ten commandments on the board that too few of us follow, the American flag blowing in the opposite direction of which we're used to seeing it showing how government wasn't doing it's job. The crucifix, most importantly is the glue of this picture, it ties in all the aspects of which P was trying to emphasize. It symbolizes how people have died for something, and society is making it feel like they've died in vain. Jesus for our sins, yet we piss on the ten commandments. Our founding fathers and their colleagues for independence from a unfair government, and now that government is failing us. Most of all, how Martin Luther King and various others died for equality amongst all people and what do you know; a white girl holding a black man's album. Perhaps he was trying to say how whites should embrace blacks, idk. Maybe I'm looking at this too carefully. These are just some opinions, im not saying any are exactly what P had in mind, just so obervations. smile
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads
