yeah it is a nice guitar to it... frankly it should not have has ANY guitar in it at all... then at the end at the very end we could hear him say "come on baby...give me back my guitar"

jajaja, that would have been funny! smile

I agree...I really like the funky guitar solo at 1:42--the way it's played reminds me of Miko on Lovesexy tour. And the way he snuck the 2nd solo in at the end (3:02) reminds of the guitar solo at the end of Pink Cashmere that also sneaks up on you. (Not the way it's played--the way you're not really expecting it.)

I do like the song. But I just can't help feeling that this would've sounded better if it were made 15 or 20 years ago. It doesn't really sound like something from 2007. Also, for some strange reason it kinda reminds me of "Naked"-era Talking Heads. I could totally see David Byrne doing a song like this. lol

I couldn't get it as soon as it was released due to not having a credit card I had to wait a few more days. Now that I have it, not setting expectations for the song before hand, it wasn't my favourite but it's grown on me a little bit. music

For what it's worth, I think "Guitar" is FANTASTIC!! But, as with anything subjective, it's appeal depends on the consumer's internal musical tastes. What I may love, someone else may think is "lazy" or "uninspired". It's the beauty of art though...

Keep 'em coming P! Can't wait to hear the next one...

You got me, Moonshine...

I listened to it twice before bed on Saturday after downloading it,
like I said I liked the lyrical idea and the guitar solos {which remind me of his '86-'89 guitar work}, but it just seemed uninspired, especially his vocal delivery. Then I listened to it 20 or so times back to back, literally, before
band practice, very loudly, and concluded that it's a GREAT song. It really pumped me up to go play my own shit, this was the first time a song has grown on me this drastically. The bass guitar in it is OUTSTANDING! I think the haters need to give a few more spins, then decide.

The song really IS growing on me. I was sceptical at first, but now I'm diggin' it. It's very different from what he's been putting out these last few years. It sounds like 90's Prince to me, like someone turned back the hands of time. Like he's back to where he was before he got together with Manuela.
Hmmm...Got me really interested in the feauture realeses hmmm

I liked it, but I was just getting into the song and it ended. I was looking for more song to jam to. It just seems like the song is really short as far as lyrics, I could just imagine this live and him doing a long drawn out guitar solo. guitar

I wasn't expecting much because of the negative reviews, but I have to put my 2 cents in - this song is GREAT! Musically, it sounds a lot like 1980-1983 Prince, which is a sound a lot of us would always love to hear more of. Though it doesn't sound old - it just sounds like the vibe of that era, which is for sure one of Prince's best. I think this song is fantastic.

its ok , we were all giving knee-jerk reactions to the song on a few listens and thankfully Prince's music isnt that transparent , it can grow on us over time smile

I think that he took his original fanbase (and himself) as far as he could with his entire catalog up-to and including TRC/ONA/NEWS, and I honestly think he "started over" with Musicology.

IMHO he's going after a new target audience, which would be teenagers and young twentysomethings. Part of him knows that his original fanbase will still support him, but stuff that we'd like (most of us are in our mid-to-late 30's) would not attract new fans.

To me, musically it sounds like he's going through a midlife crisis. His music output now is the equivalent of divorcing his wife of 30 years, buying a Porsche and dating a 20-year old blonde. Which is OK, if you're the Porsche dealer or the 20-year old blonde . . .

This is an interesting assessment. I am in my early 30s and have been a fan for about 26 years. I enjoy most of P's current output. Musicology and 3121 both have some great songs on them. I dig Guitar and Song of the Heart.

I really don't think this music is targeted at the 20 somethings out there. It doesn't sound like anything that they are listening to. I think Prince is just doing what he does best - making music that relfects whatever inspires him to create it at the time. Some people like it and some people don't. But I really don't get the feeling that he is targeting any particular demographic.

Love it - a catchy, 'Princey' tune that does hark back to the mid eighties vibe. Nice to hear a more electronic and melodic sound these days (3121) as opposed to the James Brown impersonations, jazz-bar schmaltzy ballads, and horns instead of synths - basically treading water and not creating the colourful, magical stuff he's capable of.
A great little tune indeed.

I would say that it is a very nice song. But I ask you this. Does it sould like a lead-off single for a new album that will have commercial appeal. I imagine it is the new single, but an not sure if it is just an outtake that P wants to put out there.

Hummm, I was thinking that Guitar is a nice track but, if it is really the first single of an upcoming new album, then Guitar is his worst first single of all time! I mean, come on, I like the song, but, don't you think that it's one of his least memorable singles? I mean, it's not necessary to look at the 80's or even the 90's singles: The Work Pt.1, Musicology, Cinnamon Girl, Black Sweat or Fury are far better than Guitar!

Sounds like summat the dude would toss off in an afternoon spent with his feet on the mixer and his left hand shoved in a bucket of Kangeroo meat, sucking on a fisherman's friend.

Parade-era guff, with lyrical nod to Girls & Boys, but more a UniBond Premier when compared to that ditties Premiership standards.

That said, Dave Grohl couldn't wipe the Nirvana from his shoe, to come up with a piece that's this slick.

Speaking of slick - its about time the Big Little Man, took up a producer. I know he likes to dizzle his own shizzle. But surely he is always open to ideas and creative flexability. I aint saying rope in Rick Rubin - the struggling acts/comeback kids saviour for hire - but just someone who may bring a bit of joie de' vivre to the table.

For its in the plasticity on recent swag that O Purple one is found somewhat lacking in recent times.

But yeah, 5.8 on the Pitchfork scale, says I.
