Yep. Again from the 82 period, the year that I brought up earlier. I'm telling ya'll! No telling what arena P would have went into after that. The release of the movie Purple Rain dictated that P tone down his image. That film altered the course of P's career bigtime. U could kinda see the direction P was going with tracks like "Computer Blue" and "Darling Nikki". Especially on the unrealeased, unedited versions. I would LOVE to get my hands on the album P recorded after 1999 and BEFORE Purple Rain. I've written a few threads on that very album on here in the past.

original "Jerk Out" lyrics:

I took her 2 my crib and I tied her up
I figured that's what she liked
Maybe I was wrong but what the hell
It didn't matter 2 me - she was white
I said "How come people in your neighborhood
Don't like it when a brother's rich?
Ain't my blood the same color as yours?
Answer that question, bitch!"

It just pisses U off 2 see me drivin' that fancy car, don't it?
Bet U'd rather see me drivin' one of those [ester grate ones]
Like the one your daddy drives, wouldn't U?
Let me tell U one thing - that's dead!
About as dead as U'll be if U don't rearrange your brain
Catch my drift?
Turn it up!

Can you enlighten me on what's known about that album, blackguitaristz? I'd appreciate it. Like what tracks are known to exist from that project, did it have a working title, etc?

Jesus Christ, this again? Listen, Prince is an artist. If an author wrote a rape scene or a director pressed the slow motion button on a head exploding in a movie, it's dismissed as an extension of artistic expression. You don't even consider the mind or personality of the originator of the concept or idea. If a songwriter wants to sing about rape or murder or incest or Nazism or gently teasing a tied up nun's clit with the crown of thorns on a vibrating crucifix - it only registers as contoversial in the spastic minds of silly little people who'll only ever think silly little things and tie their brain up in silly little knots. You can't build walls. If you put boundaries on artistic expression and the limits of imagination, then you're a fascist. And if you're a fascist, you can fuck off.

fuck edit
[Edited 11/6/06 12:50pm]

Exactly. And the argument that lyrics stand closer to the artist him/herself than other forms of art is not a valid argument in my opinion.

I remember seeing a track list regarding this "in between" album in Black Beat magazine in 83. This is when the album would have been released. Warner's didn't want P to release an album in that year because they wanted him to hold off untill 84 and release an album along with the film. P actually spoke about this "in between" album in his first interview with Rolling Stone in 85. I remember most of the titles mentioned in Black Beat were titles I have never seen since. But a few of the ones I do remember listed were The Dance Electric, 100 M.P.H. and Compter Blue. Now I KNOW that in the books D.M.S.R. and The Vault, it lists the recording dates of these songs. BUT, I have no doubt that many of P's songs could have been written much earlier. One thing that I found to be interesting is the mention of The Dance Electric. P mentions "Dance the dance electric" in the lyrics of the vocal version of GOD, which was released in 84.

I've mentioned this several times on this site. I had the pleasure of recording some guitar solos for a Morris Day project back in 95. A few orger's have this. We recorded it at Andre's loft in L.A. with Andre as engineer. Anyway, I was there with the both of them for around 12 hours. We talked about several things, including the rivalry between Jesse and P. Anyway, during the night, Andre mentioned that P wanted to record Andre's song "Red Light" that ended up on A.C. in 85. Andre said that the song was actually recorded back in 82. P wanted to do a trade for The Dance Electric and Red Light. The only thing that would change would be the lead vocals. P wanted to keep the music tracks to Red Light in tact, unchanged. Just like Andre's version to The Dance Electric. The key was that, of course, P wanted to take sole authorship to Red Light. Andre said no dice. He said that he never really had any intention of releasing Red Light untill P was so hot for wanting to do it. That's why Red Light ended up on A.C.The album that has "The Dance Electric".

Excellent example. P was definately on this trip during this period. There are too many songs during this 81, 82 period that has these overtones. These lyrics also tie in with the lyrics to Ice Cream Castle. Where again, the theme of a black man/white woman is the centerpiece.

Not specifically. Mainly cuz I didn't ask him about that. U know, like I didn't ask him "Hey brah, did u write "Do Me, Baby"? He did say, besides "Red Light", that he played bass on "a few things" of P's second album, and DEFINATELY bass on "Uptown". As far as Jesse and P, Morris and Andre both talked in depth about this. They rapped about this more than anything else. Basically, both of them felt that P was intimidated by Jesse's playing AND his image. U have to remember, Jesse was considered to be a pretty boy and many women chased after Jesse when he was in The Time. Jesse being single, well,..u do the math. Similar thing with Dez. Dez was hella popular with female fans. It's just that Dez was married and being a Christian, that didn't fall into his structure. So, they said that all of this fuelled the flames between Jesse and P. P definately had a problem with female fans hanging out backstage trying to get to Dez or Jesse and even Mark. He wanted good looking cats in his bands cuz that made him look good. BUT he didn't want to know about the aftermath. P had a problem with female attention going elsewhere.

I would of asked him specifically; i don;t give a flying fuck lol.

Do you believe he played on the Prince album? The engineers contradict this immensely saying there were not guests in the studio. Maybe he means that like 'do me baby' he helped with saongs like 'feel for you' a few years earlier and those songs were based on his bass part.

As popular and as talented as dez and jesse may have been many people don;t know who the fuck they are. They're nothing without Prince; let's be real but anybody can be jealous of others getting female attention; hey prince was a straight single man.

SoulAlive

I recall a mid-80s interview in Right On magazine where Morris said that, when The Time were touring with Prince,he (not Prince) would get the majority of the ladies....to the point where he would even send some of them to Prince."I would put a bow on their head and leave them outside Prince's hotel room",he said."I was being generous. They really wanted me"

lol
