This topic was brought up before. Maybe a year ago. I went into the fact that this sly angle with violence is pertinent on his 1999 album. Which Extra comes from the same period. I have no doubt that this song was written for Vanity6. P wouldn't have released this for himself. Especially at that time. But the rape theme is explored like a motherfucker in P's own "Lady Cab Driver". It has the overtone that he COULD be raping Jill. By having J.J. moan and shit also alludes to that P is just pleasuring Jill. Which doesn't support rape all that well. P is far from stupid. He wants to give the hint at rape without actually committing to it. Just so it has that edge of slight violence. The lyric sung by P in Loveable fits this theme. Elsewhere on the 1999 album is what I just wrote a thread about; Don't Worry, I Won't Hurt You... I Only Want To have Some Fun" The fact that he has to say "Don't Worry... I Won't Hurt You" implies something possibly painful regarding sex. More clearly; anal sex. It's basically
"Come on baby. I'll be gentle.... Don't worry. Just relax. It's not going to hurt. I just want to do this. But trust me,...it'll feel good." And then the video to Automatic where his tied up and shit.

interesting analysis of the '1999' album.Several of the songs do have a little violent imagery. You mentioned the "implied" rape sequence in "Lady Cab Driver" and there's also Lisa's screams at the end of "DMSR".Then a year or so later,he was in 'Purple Rain',smacking Apollonia around.

A scream doesn't mean anything bad.

Prince didn't write the violent scene in PR; he even commented on it when asked and said' it wasn't meant to offend anyone'.

You could look into alot of blues artist lyrics and pick up negative images if you wanted to.

Re artistic license: numerous artists have written from the pov of murderers and/or rapists. Nick Cave has almost made a career out of it, including an album called "Murder Ballads." Another Aussie band called Hunters and Collectors have an amazing song like that called "Throw your arms around me" (Crowded House covered it).
Each of these was a clear case of roleplay. Did anyone doubt that Sister, Jack U Off or Bob George were provocative stories?

Don't read into it too much. 'lady cab driver' could just be rough sex not neccessarily rape. Some women like it hard!

I want to get off the personal shit now and just enjoy the music.

Let

Not Shockadelica, it's from my favorite track, "Extra Loveable".

I don't think U heard me (Ooh ooh!)
I'm on the verge of rape
I'm on the verge of rape
I'm on the..

I'm sorry, but I'm just gonna have 2 rape U
Now are U going 2 get into the tub or do I have 2 drag U?
Yeah!
Don't make me drag U
I can be very cruel
If U don't stop the groove

I remember reading the track was at one point intended for Vanity.....so who knows. Personally I have no problem with these lyrics.

Nor do I.

Because... Prince can do whatever he wants!

I agree that it was written from and for a female perspective but don't agree with the anal part. When I first heard the song it reminded me of Prince doing The Time background vox as he did with The Time debut album. He had himself sounding like a self female chorus. I realy think it is from a woman's perpsective (dominatrix style or woman in foreceful control such as Nasty Girls "I need 7 inches more..get it up!" content). Extraloveable is female perspective just as Get It Up was as well as The Stick. He had Morris and them sing those songs from female perspective though. Ive always felt weird listening to Get It Up from them going "wtf?"-it's like how he did 17 Days but it seems more "right" when Prince flips the script by singing it himself.

Which also leads to his female perpsective songs. He does both: he gets to write from the forceful sexual woman, the woman done wrong, as well as the spurned hurt lover. Such as How Come You Dont Call Me. Prince gets to have it both ways (pun intended). His androgyny isn't/wasn't just in his look.

violent edit: After reading B Guittarist post I do now see an undercurring theme of sex/violence form that 1999 era. Wonder what he was going through or maybe it was just high art s&m-funk (not saying that rape is form of s&m or normal secual pleasure and all that entails).

This is a really interesting topic. Prince definitly has some very hardcore sexual history. I would even through out there that most of us fans must also to some degree, eh????
And for the record, Jill wasn't being rapped in cabdriver--she was feelin' GOOOOOD!!!

Uh, yeah,..I know it was a character. It's not the first time that P calls himself names in his own songs. It's in the long version of "Kiss" and in a backward message in the intro of Let's Go Crazy.

Think about this logically.

He either seriously means 'I am going to rape you', which he would be announcing to the whole world on a track of his, which i doubt is a serious statement, or he means it in the context of a trusting sexual relationship and is being a bit kinky. Or it could be a metaphor for something else.

If people want to rape they are hardly going to seriously announce their intentions to the world... come on! He was probably being controversal as well.
