This is not about your favorite song. But which song hooked you in and made you start to like Prince. For me it was When Doves Cry back in '84. It was something about the opening, that guitar, that made it so interesting. Never listened to Prince before that. Ofcourse when I saw the video, I was like, hmmmmm. When Doves Cry opened up the door and pave the way for many years to come.

no that isn't a prince song, it is a statement.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

1999 was the one I really started listening to. Even though I thought I'd be like "Whatever," and return the album, I loved it so I kept listening. I have an extreme fondness for that song for that reason.

I remember when I first heard 'The Most beautiful girl in the World' back in 1995. I was only 12 but the song seemed to have so much meaning to me.

17 Days mushy
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Moonbeam levels.. I got totally hooked on the chorus.. he's got an interesting voice

A newborn child knows nothing of destruction
Nothing of love and hate
What happens in between is a mystery
Because we don't give a damn about his fate

He said he'll never keep diaries 2 learn from his mistakes
Instead he'll just repeat all the good things that he's done
Fight 4 perfect love until it's perfect love he makes
When he's happy then his battle will be won (It's never 2 late)

The song that did it for me was 'darling nikki'
I was 9 yrs old when i heard it back in '95.
Didnt understand the lyrics at the time but i loved the music and vocals and was so anxious to know who sung it..Then about 3 months later i saw purple rain for the first time and was like wow..He sings this?

Niiiiice!

I had the 45s "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" but "Head" was the song that made me buy my first Prince album since it wasn't available on 45.

I knew all the chart stuff beforehand but it was actually Paisley Park which turned me onto him in a big way. Music Box(basically MTV for europe before MTV was born in the 80's) played it a lot and i just thought it was different and i loved the wierd video. From that moment on i was hooked.

"When Doves Cry" did it for me. I hadn't heard of him before that, mainly because of nil radio airplay. In 84 Radio 1 and Top of The Pops were churning out the likes of Culture Club/ Nik Kershaw/Howard Jones etc etc, so Prince was like a breath of fresh air.

In addition to "When Doves Cry", I guess I would add Let's Go Crazy which in turn sealed the deal. When I went to see Purple Rain, it was something about that opening sequence of the movie, where you see his silhouette and he starts "Dearly Beloved". I think many people were hooked on that part alone.

I Hate U, I've been listening to Prince since 2002, but when I heard I Hate U for the first time in 2003 I knew I would become a Prince fan in the sense of buying his whole discography.

Definitely "When Doves Cry." I listened to that tape til it made the "voop voop voop" sound in jr. high. I also really really loved "U Got the Look." My sister and I used to do the duet into our hair brushes when it came on.

I guess it was a mix of Nothing Compares 2 U and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. I'd just found out that the former was written by Prince, then I was woken up to the latter at 5 in the morning when I had to go to a Uni open day that was 4 hours away. That led me to download some of his music, and before long I was hooked. I'd say it was Little Red Corvette that truly got me hooked, it led me to buy Purple Rain and 1999, and I haven't looked back!

In fact, all that happened last October, and now I've got about 10 CD albums, 3 on vinyl and some vinyl singles. I'm hooked, and I like it!

I could understand that. If you think of the time, how many people were outright asking "Am I black or white" "Am I straight or gay"
