Technically yes. We all know Janet Jackson is nothing with JJ and TL. The thing is JJam and TL is so incredibly successful on their own I don't know if they would believe that Prince paved the way for them.

As much as I'd like to agree.... If Janet wanted to sing, she could have done so with or without much help. After all, Michael Jackson could have made that happened.

Didn't all of the Jacksons come out with with some sort of album? I mean if Latoya & Reba did it...

Jimmy and Terry learned there dance moves, sound, style and fashion from Prince. Prince made them what they are. "Prince's thinking is just on a different level then other people." says Jimmy Jam. "And people who expect a lot of themselves expect a lot of others. When you think a lot of yourself, you start to believe other people should be thinking of themselves along the same lines. And when they're not, you might say, hey, stupid, why aren't you doing anything? Then you end up alienating people. That's what Prince did. I remember when we we're rehearsing for the second Time tour, the 1999 tour, we we're having trouble with this song, '777-9311', and we finally got it down to where we could play it good. Then Prince came in looked at me playing keyboards, and said "Jimmy, you're not using your right hand.' and I said , there's not a part there. And he said 'Well, you MAKE a part there! You add something. You got to make it better then the record. No hands can be lazy. You got to play!' So I started using my right hand. Then a couple of rehearsals later he came in and we said, 'Hey, Prince, check this out! We're jammin'!' And Prince says, 'Okay, who's not singing? Everybody's gotta sing a harmony part.' Somebody said, 'but there's not that many harmony parts in the song, Prince.' 'Doesn't matter. Gonna be better now then it is on the record.' Okay, so now we're singing. We got our parts down. He came back three rehearsals later and said, 'Okay, where's the choreography? You guy's got to be steppin'!' Terry and Jesse are out there steppin'. Prince says, 'Jimmy Jam-what about you?' I said, 'What about me? I'm the keyboard player.' 'No you got the be steppin' with them, too.' 'I said, 'What?! I gotta play with both hands, sing, and be steppin' at the same time? Forget it. I can't do that shit.' Couple of hard rehearsals later-I'm talking about four solid hours of playing-I could do the shit in my sleep. I could play my keyboard parts, take out a handkerchief and wipe my face and put it back, still play the part, do the steppin' at the same time.' That's what Prince did, time and again. He taught us we could do things we'd never believed we could, or even thought of." And there sound, Minneapolis Sound, Time sound, is Prince's sound. Prince created it. There sound became Janet's sound, sooo Janet's sound from Control is really Prince's sound.

nod Y'know...back in the 80s when Control and Rhythm Nation came out, I loved them essentially because they sounded like Prince/Time albums. And when I saw the Control video, it looked like a Time show. I remember thinking then, well, Jimmy & Terry are responsible for Janet's sound (and career), and Jimmy & Terry were part of the Time, and Prince created the Time as an outlet for his overflowing vault of songs...so essentially Janet's sound/career is REALLY owed to Prince. Pure and simple.

So you are saying if there was no Prince, the outcome would be the same?

I don't believe Prince is totally responsible for Janet's career, only that he paved the way, musically, for JJ and TL who in my opinion made Janet's career.

the title of this thread is:

How many of You Know Janet Jackson owes her career to Prince...

not how manny of you think janet jackson owes some of her success to prince?

people are giving all the credit to prince and as a JJ and jam / lewis fan i find is quite offensive. Some prince fans probably think that he invented the keyboard and guitar as well,

this is ridiculous

You're going overboard and I'm beginning to believe this level of idol worship when it comes to Janet Jackson is so high its crazy.

Tell me where would Janet Jackson be today without JJ and TL. Where would JJ and TL be without the Time and where would the time be without Prince?

This does not take away the extraordinary talent that JJ and TL is recognized for. They have proven themselves to be excellent musicians and successful on their own. However, the early days taught them all about the art of musicianship, which layed the groundworks for their later success. That's all. Jeez. Get a grip. Ain't nobody taking nothing away from Janet Jackson. Just stating a fact.

Exactly! Jimmy and Terry are extremely talented individuals. But a lot of what they learned, they learned from Prince. They took those lessons and filtered them into their production which in turn gave Janet her "sound". Without Jimmy and Terry I doubt Janet would've broken out as big as she did with Control. Now listen to Control and tell me that doesn't have the "Minneapolis Sound" all over it.
