Prince's Most Thought Provoking Song?

I think that out of all of Prince's songs over the years, there's only one that really makes an individual want to change his or her life and that is "Last December." This song can evoke so much emotion from the listener and it will make you cry. What other songs make you sit and think for at least one minute about reality now or maybe about things that have happened in the past hmmm?

Yeah Last December is one of my faves. Another good one is Into the Light, then the obvious ones.....The Cross, Annestesia, Pop life, and so on.

Starfish and Coffee seem to get people brains ticking too.

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker--the music's crazy, and the lyrics were a real riddle to me as a kid. Great lines--"she didn't see the movie cuz she hadn't read the book first" "...fruit cocktail..." "whoever's calling can't be as cute as you" "cool, but I'm leaving my pants on cuz I'm kinda goin with someone." Prince's best lyrics IMO.

"In This Bed Eye Scream"

"Last December" is good too. I especially like the line about "in your life did you just give a little or did you give it all that you had? Were you just somewhere in the middle, not too good, not too bad?" Great stuff. He's practically saying it's better to be extremely bad than to be mediocre. That's a daring statement.

The War would probably be my next choice after Live 4 Love. There's also a thought provoking passage from My Computer which I like:

Nothing on TV I ain't seen before
Another murder on the news, I can't take no more
Evil Incorporated, blowing up bombs and thangs
I have a child, huh, I have a lot 2 explain

After a look much louder than words she said
"I passed my initiation
a friend of mine he got killed and in retaliation
I shoot the boy POP POP twice in the head
no regrets,no sorrow
i'm going back 2moro 2 make sure hes dead
cuz if i dont they'll call me a chicken"
but u can call me...

The first time I heard those lyrics when I bought TGE they blew me away.
I was not prepared 4 the content of the song after hearing it and it has always stuck in my mind about the gangfare problem that plauges America and is now coming over here in Britain. As beautiful as the song is it makes me sad.Such is the power of the song.Thats my 2 cents smile

That IS good! I've always loved the music and melody to that song, but I never really paid that much attention to the lyrics. I'll have to go listen to it again with a new perspective. Thanks!

This is Prince's most honest song and that makes it most powerful and thought-provoking.

I feel so VERY righteous after hearing that again. I listened to it three times in a row and had chills throughout. 90s Prince is so underrated it's sickening! I was about to try and listen to Dirty Mind, but there's no way to revert down to the early 80s after hearing that tasty little nugget...it's all about the GOLD ya'll. Backin' it up to P Control as I type...

Ahhhh yes, indeed it's FUN time!!!!!

Thanks again, Kape!
