Sign o' the Times - Prince flips through the pages of the newspaper like the album flips through a host of musical genres.

it's either "don't worry, i won't hurt u. i only want u to have some fun.." [1999]
or "dearly beloved (..) if de-elevator tries 2 bring u down, go crazy, punch a higher floor.." [purple rain]
don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain

Tom

Its not a Prince album but...

The opening to the Gene Simmons album used the scare the hell out of me when I was younger! The song is called "Radioactive".

Sounds all satanic and shit, but cool as hell.

I haven't heard all, but I like the way Emancipation begins and how ends. It's as if a door is opening and closing, and Prince is letting you in, and then shuts you out as if saying okay, I spent enough time right about now, I'm going home, I've made my point. smile

Go home and hear more Prince if you believe this

I always thought the intro to the Black Album was the bomb, cuz he was kind of letting on that he meant for us to hear the album--and it was going to be funky:

"So U found me/Good, I'm glad/This is Prince/
The cool of cools...People get ready/nouveau dance here/All the girls and all the boys/Get close/Have no fear!"

No one can pull that off like P, no one.

I dont get it... do i have different version of TRC, or why are u ranking its opening as no 1???

I just hate it, although I love the album.
Opening track is really good, but it is totally spoiled with that slow motion voice... uh. and its too long, i mean the slo-mo part. I have to skip it every time sad

But, best openings are, as said many times above:
Lovesexy,
SoTT
My name is prince
and Black Album.

4 me it will always b:

"Dearly Beloved, we r gathered here 2day 2 get thru this called life..."

As much as most of us would probably not want 2 admit it, the Purple Rain album was a defining moment 4 Prince, and a lot of his best work was showcased.

Runner up (tie):

"Rain is wet, sugar is sweet..."

Lovesexy truly is the way.

(and)

"Open Ur heart, open ur mind..."

Around The World In A Day was an artistic-funky journey from beginning 2 end.

Yeah, I agree with most of you. But the first album oppening that popped in my head was 'Purple Rain-Let's Go Crazy' It's something about the keys in the background and the way he says "Dearly Beloved..." and the "There's something else...the afterworld..." you have to love it.

2nd, I'll be shot for sayin this, but the opening for 'The Rainbow Children' is sooo funky/jazzy man, you have to love that also. If you have any kick in you stereo, or car stereo, you can wake the block with TRC. Masterpiece!

definitely "Eye No" on Lovesexy. My favourite Prince-Album, by the way. After that, Let´s go crazy!

And I just rememberd the opening of the second Lovesexy-Live-Video. Erotic City is the song. When the drum machine starts and he says "bass". That´s just the best!

For You-beautiful.
1999- just wicked.
Purple Rain-The ultimate album intro.
Lovesexy-very cool.

Also...the intro to the SOTT movie has to be my all time favorite.
"Pam...that's just stupid."

Probably eye No, its sets up the mood for the album really well and prepares you for the journey. otherwise Sign O the Times. The album starts with one of the best songs hes ever written, if that didn't get your attention what will?
As for TRC, I love the track, but I have to say I hate the voice that opens it.

Most of Prince's opening songs are very good at setting the tone for a particular record.
He is very clever with that.

Always dug the beginnings of albums, not just P's. I'd have to go with what's already been said, though honestly I can't really think of a truly lame opener from Prince. Some that I like that haven't been mentioned:

* "Chaos & Disorder" -- in fact, the first three tracks are pretty badass.

* "Dirty Mind" & "Controversy" -- welcome to the 80's, this is not your father's funk.

* "Batman" -- "I'm not gonna kill you..." (aw, c'mon, a little love for Batman!)

Two of the greatest album openers of all-time IMHO, both from 1991:

* Public Enemy, "Apocalypse 91" -- that's not a CD playing, it's an invading army!

* U2, "Achtung Baby" -- again, "things are different now."

from Prince I'd say " I Wanna Be your Lover" that song at the time&the Vibe just was cool.matter of fact on a Bootleg from the "Lovesexy" Show that song just came out so cool when he played it.other Opening Songs that Knocked me out:Earth,Wind&Fire's "Shinning Star" from the Album "that's the way of the World".Michael Jackson"Don't Stop till you get enough" that to me is a way to start off a Album from the Album "Off The Wall".Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze from his Debut that Groove alone still is Powerful to me.

don't know if this counts, but I'd say Crystal Ball. My second favorite Prince song and since my most favorite is the ending to an album (Adore), nothing can top that first song!

Besides that, I'd pick The Black Album...but I also wonder why no one has mentioned "I wanna b your lover".
