Looks like it's a race to #1 between Prince's 3121 and Ben Harper's BOTH SIDES OF THE GUN. Both were released on 3/21/2006 and are getting mostly positive, supportive reviews. Harper may have cut into his sales because stores are stocked with two versions of the double LP: a 2 disc version sells for $18.99 (on sale for $13.99) and the 3 disc deluxe edition sells for $28.99 (on sale for $21.99). The Prince offering is a single disc selling for $13.99 (on sale for $9.99) and is also on display in Starbucks coffee houses

Odds favor Prince charting higher since new tunes have been showcased on national TV on Saturday Night Live (a rebroadcast aired this past weekend). Harper has booked a worldwide tour (Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada and US) from the Spring into Summer where the new tunes will be featured prominently.

ONE-DAY SALES:
THE PRINCE OF TIDES

Through the Shifting Currents of the Music Biz, One Legend Continues to Walk on Water

March 22, 2006

In the early going, Prince’s new album on Universal Republic, 3121, is trending just shy of 200k and has a shot at hitting that sales plateau, depending on how much Starbucks weighs in.

The next big debut is from Virgin’s Ben Harper, which should move over 50k units and possibly top 60k

Those numbers would be that far off of the units Prince would have sold if not for the "purple ticket"
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

If you won the ticket you could have sold it on ebay for upward about 10Gs

Oh come on now...you seriously think the "purple ticket" is gonna get him an extra 100,000 copies sold?

I know you like to dog Musicology's sales because of the concert giveaways, but 3121 is selling well on its own. That purple ticket isn't causing thousands of people to buy ten or twenty copies. The man's got a legitimate hit album, and that's just the way it is.

The purple ticket is not going to dramatically effect sales numbers.

exactly...the pruple ticket is no factor...who even knows about that shit but us. I don't know why it is so hard for some of you to believe that P provides an alternative to all the other crap thats out there. People have been waiting for P to get himself together...he has a big base of old scholl fans (not fanatics like us) but people that heard Black Sweat and saw the video and said Go Prince!!

You make a good point. I have no clue why so many people want to downplay Prince's recent success, and make excuses for it. It boggles the mind.

Maybe some of the younger folks don't realize how big P was back in the mid-80's. He was bigger than anyone but Michael Jackson. P has alot of fans that lost track of him over the past 15 years, but are now again interested in what he is doing. The die-hards who have been there all along are already a substantial number, and the more casual fans - who get most of his CDs - add more to the total. But he's been bringing in the older fans who forgot about him, or thought he was a joke with the name change. He's also bringing in younger and new fans who are attracted by the positive press, and who want to discover his music. He can get big numbers, and it's all legitimate.

How can the ticket make a difference? If so many people want to buy the ticket, doesn't that indicate some support for the man? If so many people buy concert tickets, how does that mean it's a failure for the CD? For these "gimmicks" to work, people have to be interested in the artist.

Prince is enjoying a major career renaissance and we should all be enjoying it, instead of bitching, predicting how quickly it will fade, and being negative about every single thing associated with Prince. Or was it better when he was releasing stuff on the internet only, and he was a late-night joke to most people?

musicology sold 177k in stores first week added with concert cds it was 191k

so sellin 200k isnt really outta the normal i think if he released it on itunes it would sell 250-300k

the tour brought back alot of old fans back in the fold and added new fans too

unlike madonnas tour which had much less attendence it didnt impact her cd sales since mostly hardcore fans when to the concerts

You hit it dead on the nail.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
